Heard around the house

Me: If you don’t get your homework done, I’m going to crack you upside the head.

Junior: THAT’S CHILD ABUSE!

Me: No, that’s hyperbole, which you should be learning about right now.

    Me: Always question authority.
    Daughter: Why
    Me: That’s my girl.
    Daughter: Oh, I get it

    “That’s child abuse!”

Now *that’s* hyberbole. Sounds like she’s got it down.

You’re lucky you don’t live in Synecdoche. She’d have to take bathos.

  5. Wyowanderer Says:

My dad would have cracked me upside the head, and THEN told me to do my homework.
Kids sure have it easy these days.

I like Terry Pratchett’s view that, when threatening a child, you should take it to an amusing hyperbolic extreme.

“Do your homework, or I’m going the break both your legs, then tie them in a knot over a tree branch and play pinata.”

    “You’re FUNNY!”

  7. Joe Huffman Says:

@Tirno, that is my approach in general, not just my kids. I ran into problems when I didn’t know enough about the background of someone. They had been in an abusive relationship for decades and for some reason that particular humor trigger had been excised and replaced with a different sort of trigger. It resulted in a reaction that was unpleasant for everyone.

I try to know my audience better now.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
