Stop touching it

Off duty cop shoots self in stomach on an elevator:

News story here.

Awful. I wonder why he was handling it. And I wonder why he was handling it like that.

Seems like a variation on the old cop adage:

“Badge’ll get you pussy, pussy’ll get your badge.”

Except impressing civvie chicks by playing with your gun won’t just cost your job, it’ll cost your life.

Almost looked like he was trying to move it from what seemed to be a belt holster of some sort, into his coat pocket. Why? Who knows.

I also don’t buy the ricochet off the elevator wall story. Those things are all sheet metal…would have punched a hole and MAYBE hit him with some shrapnel.

He appears on at least a couple of occasions to angle his hand and the muzzle towards his side, as if trying to find either the opening of his coat pocket, or his holster opening. Then bang.

Jerry Miculek just illustrated that same mistake in his latest video on drawing from a holster. It’s a common mistake from those unfamiliar with their gear, or who move it around a lot.

    My 2/100ths of a dollah.

Being a cop doesn’t make one an expert in gun handling. Don’t believe me, refer to the video again. Complacency kills.

  4. Paul Kisling Says:

That was beautiful. Remember ONLY THE POLICE are Properly trained to shoot themselves in the stomach while playing with their guns!!

  5. Deaf Smith Says:

Keep the gun in your holster folks.

It’s loaded and has no need to be messed with.

He could have capped his wife or any other unfortunate soul in the elevator.

  6. JTC Says:

Oh. Wife. Not cruising for chicks. Just stupid.

  7. Standard Mischief Says:

I’m pretty sure I saw the gun just go off without being touched.

  8. KM Says:

    Screw around with gun.
    Check.
    Finger on trigger.
    Check.
    Point gun at body part.
    Check.
    Pull trigger.
    Fuck!

I wasn’t there, but it reminds me of one job I had where my investigators went armed with 2″ Cobras and S&W Model 36s. They wore them on trouser belt holsters and were always shifting them around to sit down or hitching them up or just generally fussing with them to make them comfortable almost unconsciously the way people adjust the rest of their clothing. It could be that this poor guy was coming from his car, the gun or his pants had shifted, and it was chafing him.

It might have hit a structural part. That would be solid enough to generate a ricochet.

I do see something – sparks or shrapnel – coming from behind his wife, so it looks like it hit back there. He’s bloody darned lucky he didn’t shoot her.

  11. RS Says:

Looks like he lost his grip and then caught it. This could be an illustration of don’t catch a dropped gun.

  12. AndyN Says:

There’s a silver lining here in that the entire episode was captured on video and maybe somebody can learn something from it. The obvious first lesson would be stop touching it and don’t try to catch a dropped gun, but there were a couple of other things that jumped out at me.

Cell reception in elevators is generally crap. If there’s an emergency and you’re trying to call 911, don’t do what the wife did and let the door close. Likewise, if there’s a chance that there are people on the floor who may be able to help, don’t let the door close.

The guy who just shot himself wasn’t exactly displaying safe gun handling skills while he was healthy and alert. Walking away and leaving his still loaded gun laying on the floor where he could pick it up and stagger around with it as he became even less coordinated from loss of blood probably wasn’t the best idea.

  13. Gus Says:

I’m betting he was stoned on meth. Most cops around here are half stoned on duty and when they go off duty all hell breaks loose.

  14. Will Says:

As much trouble as he had trying to get it out of it’s initial carry spot, I can understand why he might want to switch it to his outer coat pocket. I’m thinking he might want to switch to something with a heavier trigger, or a manual safety. People who play with guns like that aren’t likely to change their habits, so probably best if he gets a more fumble friendly gun.

  15. Deaf Smith Says:

My Glock 26 has a NY-1 and 3.5 lb connector.

8lb strait pull. No loss in accuracy.

Years ago in Texas a police chief of a small town was in Wal-Mart and had his Glock 27 stuck in his waistband. It dropped down his pants and went off as he grabbed it.

Burned his to-to a bit but that was. Thank God no kids got shot!

  16. Huck Says:

And some folks wonder why cops aint even on my list of people to emulate when it comes to firearm safety and proficiency.

  17. Seerak Says:

There’s a tendency to treat elevators as very private while they are moving, because there’s no way somebody could possibly barge in. He’s with his wife only, so likely decided now was a good time to take it out and reseat it or otherwise deal with it bugging him.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
