   When my two kids were 2 and 6, our neighborhood arranged to have “Santa” visit each house on Christmas Eve. As the kids and the wife & I watched from the stairs, where Santa could not see us, he ate a cookie and took a sip of milk, put a few candy canes on the tree, and put a few gifts under the tree. The kids were bewildered.

   A few years later when I asked them if they remembered it, they told me they both knew it was ME playing Santa. Even though I had been standing right beside them during the event, they had rearranged their memories to conform with their understanding of the facts.

   This is something I have kept in mind ever since about how I behave with my kids and interact with the rest of the world.

   My son (7) conked out right on time. My daughter (11) was still awake at 9:30pm, wracked with anxiety that Santa would skip our house because she hadn’t fallen asleep. She kept asking me where Santa was, so I’d pull out my iPhone and show her Santa’s position on the NORAD site.

   Finally I told her that if she just relaxed, closed her eyes and kept her head on her pillow, Santa would know she was trying and he would stop by. She was out cold in five minutes.

   Same here. Georgia figured it all out this year, but helped keeping the spirit alive with our youngest.
