A 911 operator should be fired: 911 Operator Tells FL Woman To Put Gun Down While Robbers Were In Her Home

What was that statement from the Zimmerman trial”

“Dispatchers are not police officers and cannot compel compliance” or somesuch??

Keep the gun, lay the PHONE down.

  2. dustydog Says:

Yep, Zimmerman trial was the first thing I thought too.
If the poor woman had needed the gun to protect herself, the family and the DA would be citing the 911 tape as evidence of bad intent.

It would be nice if there were some way to change the incentives 911 operators have to give bad advice.

  3. JTC Says:

Can’t see the comparison of this to the 911 operator in the Z case. That one gave good and logical advice that coulda woulda saved Z’s life, and you can bet your ass he wishes he had listened.

This one though? Nothing good and logical about it, and that’s the thing; we’re responsible for our own selves. 911 is a good thing but they are not on the scene and they are not in control of the situation.

It’s similar to the old line about when seconds count the cops are just minutes away…the gun shops and shows around here have been handing out bumper stickers: “I CARRY A GUN BECAUSE A COP IS TOO HEAVY”. I took one and posted it in my store after I struck through “HEAVY” and changed it to it “SLOW”.

Just what advice was that? Can you provide a link to it that specifically states the advice and specifically shows that Z ignored said advice?

  5. JTC Says:

    @ bob r,

Repeated ad nauseum, (and at this point Z is out of his car, his first and biggest mistake):

    Z: “Shit he’s running”
D: “He’s running? Which way is he running?”
Z: “Down towards the other entrance…”
    D: “Which entrance is that…”
    Z: “The back entrance…fucking _____ puff puff”
    D: “Are you following him?”
    Z: “Yeah”
D: “”Okay, we don’t need you to do that”

That last advice had no legal weight at all, but it was good advice, and Z should have heeded it, kept his juices in check, kept his ass in his car, and kept his eyes on the wannabe…and he might still have the life he had before.

Make no mistake, once Z was accosted and attacked he did exactly what he had to do, stop the threat with the means he carried just for that purpose. But that’s an entirely separate set of actions/reactions than what is outlined above. Your gun is there to save your actual life, but doing everything you can to avoid having to use it might save your life as you know it…just ask Z about that.

  6. wizardpc Says:

“we don’t need you to do that” is not advice. Its a statement of opinion. Exactly the same as if the dispatcher had said, “I like the color orange.”

This is English. There are rules 🙂

  7. JTC Says:

    wizardpc,

Your comment is a statement of opinion. And it’s wrong. Advice means to advise or provide information without the implied authority of a command, as with the idiot fla operator.

Don’t know what you are a wizard of -pinball maybe?- but it ain’t English. And you’re an idiot; now there’s a statement of opinion for ya.

  8. JTC Says:

Oh, and “I like the color orange.”? Yeah, that’s not a statement of opinion either…it’s a declaration of personal preference and subjective fact.

Gotta work on those rules…maybe some night courses. 😉

  9. wizardpc Says:

Ah, yes. The time-honored tradition of calling someone an idiot and telling them they have the wrong opinion.

Both hallmarks of people who are confident in their arguments….

  10. JTC Says:

Yes, it’s right up there with -wrong- unsolicited critical statements. But at least I made an argument of rebuttal, where’s yours?

But the idiot thing was harsh…guess I was just getting into the whole statement of opinion thing, and we had been talking about the idiot at fla 911, so…sorry ’bout that, chief.

  11. Bubblehead Les Says:

Not only Fired, but Black Listed from showing up at ANY 911 Call Center.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
