Gun Reviews

ShootingIllustrated notes that the R51s they got were all top notch but there were issues with others that weren’t handpicked. They will no disclose if guns reviewed are off the shelf.

My understanding is that manufacturers send guns to be reviews. This practically shouts handpicked and thoroughly gone through.

  2. Wes S. Says:

I’d say the fact that ST “won’t disclose if review guns are off-the-shelf” pretty much confirms that most of them are, in fact, handpicked by the gunmakers.

Personally, I’d rather have Ruger’s new striker-fired version of the LC9. Or, better yet, one of the baby CZs.

  3. Old NFO Says:

Actually the NRA Shooting Illustrated mag WILL disclose where the guns come from- Pre -production or actual production. I verified that with Jay G. today at lunch.

  4. Rivrdog Says:

My first clue with my new R51 was what the factory lubed it with: white lithium grease. The Manual does not call for that, so it occurred to me that there had been some op difficulties. Mine stopped after 70 rounds because there were metal shavings in the firing pin channel. It was timed perfectly. Bolt group takedown is NOT supported in the manual, but I did it anyway, cleaned up the mess that the factory left, reassembled and now my R51 runs fine.

I’d still like to do something about the cheap plastic magazine floorplates which flex alarmingly when the magazine is loaded. It appears that a dropped magazine would come apart and spew it’s load and parts. Hopefully, Big R will address this issue.

I haven’t decided whether to send mine back or not.

Yeah, Unc mistyped the most important word in this post. (Eh. It happens.)

Should say Shooting Illustrated will “now” disclose if guns reviewed are off the shelf.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
