This suggests that US transportation security officials are inefficient, incompetent, on using the data for other, undisclosed purposes
Inefficient? Check.
Incompetent? Check.
Lying about using the data? Check.
Sounds like a typical gov agency on all counts.
Need to add in “Totally Uncontrolled, Unaccounted for Spending” to really make them part of the D.C. “in” crowd.

This is why I book international flights to start in Canada.
The boarding gate people there are a damned sight more polite than the TSA as well.

Plus, since we know that the Federales cross-check Databases all the time, in spite of there being Laws against it, if one is purchasing a Firearm with Plastic at the Ye Olde Gun Shoppe, why bother to shred the 4473? They can just run your Plastic, compare it to what was sold at the same time in the Ye Olde Gun Shoppe, and they know what you have.
