In ATF news

Ares Armor CEO Tries to Reason with ATF over Customer Privacy; Raid Ensues. Now, Ares is posting photos from the surveillance camera footage* of ATF agent’s various clusterfuckery on their facebook page and turning them into internet memes. The ironic bit is that ATF is now butthurt and has asked Ares to stop posting those photos citing officer privacy.

Personally, I would post photos zooming in on badge numbers and names of the agents.

* I bet future raids involve taking all security cameras and storage.

This is why you need your video stored offsite and preferably in a data center that resides in a country that will laugh at a U.S. warrant. There are plenty of great data centers in Russia.

Facebook link goes nowheres. This is my shocked face.

  3. SayUncle Says:

Works fine for me and probably just about anyone else.

  4. Stewie Says:

Facebook link works when signed into Facebook. Not sure if you can view it without an account.

  5. SPQR Says:

Jackbooted thugs have no privacy rights

  6. Flighterdoc Says:

What MAC said….got to stream your security feed off-site and preferably out of the country.

  7. Old NFO Says:

Off site storage is right… 🙂 And they have NO expectation of privacy when they are doing anything.

  8. chiefjaybob Says:

Meh, working now. Didn’t last night for some odd reason, and I was signed in to the Book of Faces. Weird. Clearly, operator error.

  9. Weer'd Beard Says:

Kinda hard to argue officer privacy when they were raiding a store on a public street with a public sidewalk, and the storefront is all plate glass.

Their call for privacy is like the dipshits that argue that the Google cars can’t drive down their streets and take pictures of their houses.

And again, even if NONE of this is true, officers should not have any privacy when they interact with the public or private property. This isn’t a police state…at least not yet.

  10. Daniel in Brookline Says:

My hat’s off to Ares for putting up with all this, and not losing their sense of humor about it all!

  11. Kristophr Says:

    Google +.

Hide the cameras, and have a server automatically upload videos to your cloud space.

I even have it on my smart phone … it mirrors all video to google+ automatically. Stealing the flash memory from me will not prevent your antics from reaching the internet.

And if I am not in custody, the videos are going up on liveleak, out of the reach of federal judges.

  12. Kristophr Says:

    Sayuncle:

Facebook is evil. Companies have a facebook presence because idiots like having their privacy compromised for some reason.

Not everyone has subjected themselves to it.

  13. Kristophr Says:

OK, set up a dumb anon account.

    Still evil.

Mac you read my mind. Pretty damn sad you have to store your information in a country that is supposed to be less free than America in order to protect it.

  16. Jay Dee Says:

Personally, I would have filled my customer list with the names of all the local politicians, prominent gun grabbers, Democratic voter lists including the differentially living. Yes, my 5,000 customers are in there. I did not erase them but they’re interspersed among 50,000 others. Good luck finding them.

Not creating a Facebook account just to view the obvious. Facebook sucks.

  19. JKB Says:

Streaming off-site won’t necessarily work as they’ll just cut the hardwire and deploy a jammer as part of the raid. You’d need to run to a hidden hard drive somewhere in the house with a concealed feed. But also, send it off-site. That won’t stop the damaging of cameras, accidentally of course, during the raid.

  20. Paul Kisling Says:

JKB statement is giving the ATF a whole lot of credit for having brains they don’t possess.

  21. Seerak Says:

JKB: there are various jamming-resistant transmission methods; radio narrowcasting/tightbeam to a nearby relay (which has the bonus advantage of being usable on public frequencies they’d dare not jam, but without itself interfering with them). A laser link would be high-bandwidth, vastly more precise and immune to jamming, except for physical obstruction of the beam. One of my past employers actually did that to bridge together an intranet across a few city blocks.

Super-nerdy paranoid stuff, yes, but it’s a sign of the times.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
