What if you called 911 and No One Answered?

Several years ago I had a woman in a bathrobe show up on my front porch at 0200 claiming to have been assaulted, and the people who did it were still in her house. I called 911, told the operator very calmly and clearly my address and name, and let the lady talk to her. The cops never showed up at my house. They couldn’t find it, even though the number was clearly marked at the bottom and there were less than ten driveways off of the whole road. I had to walk out through the woods and intercept a deputy driving in circles in the next pasture to talk to them.

Quite a learning experience. Where I live now, the dispatch is calm, professional, friendly, and appreciative of precise reports when I call, which is more often than I like. But sometimes I get “well, we don’t have anyone who can respond (to the middle of nowhere) any time soon. Do you REALLY need an LEO?”

So… I make the calls, but I am not counting on a response.

It’s not a surprise to me or anyone who has tried to call 911 is a busy area in the busy part of the day.

I called 911 while living in LA and never got past the voicemail greeting telling me someone would come along to hear my emergency, shortly. I even called back thinking that maybe the computer parked me by accident. Ten minutes later I gave up.

The issue was a car and a motorcycle playing fast and furious on the highway. What got me to call it in was the guy in the car intentionally hitting the bike and trying to force it into the Jersey barrier. The bike got away, but then slowed down to start throwing things at the car. Who then almost hit a minivan trying to ram the bike again.

Eventually I pulled off and figured the news would tell me if anything bad happened. I just didn’t want that mess in front of me. Traffic in LA is bad on a good day with no accidents.

My wife works as a dispatcher for sheriff’s dept in a neighboring county, and frequently has to tell people she has no one to send. They have a county bigger than most north eastern states and often have 3-4 deputies to cover the entire thing.

Oh, and the jail is so understaffed that unless you murder someone, you basically get released the next day.

Yay for tree huggers being the dominant voting block, living in the city, and not caring about county law enforcement.

A Chicago blog http://crimeinboystown.blogspot.com/2014/02/fall-guy-city-blames-dispatcher-for.html has been documenting the problem of police simply being overwhelmed and not available for some time now.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
