Did someone say their gun is chambered in SacredCow?

Sheriff Jim Wilson:

The latest fad regarding defensive pistol calibers seems to be the claim that they are really all very much alike and, therefore, it doesn’t matter what you choose to carry for your personal defense. Your Honor, may the record reflect that I respectfully disagree.

He then goes on to state that most handgun calibers actually kind of suck at stopping people. And that’s true. Not sure why he included the .380 as the example since when people are having this discussion, they’re usually talking about 9mm, 45, 40 and even 357 Sig.

Ooh, hey, I can play! Not but an hour ago I bought some .357 Golden Sabers!

  2. Toastrider Says:

I want a gun chambered in .75, loaded with gyrojet rounds.

  3. Paul Says:

He used the .380 cause it is so popular and so weak in power.

And as Jeff Cooper once wrote, “anything that is very popular cannot be all that good because not that many people can specialize in that area to know if it is that good.”

Hence the popularity of low powered rounds. Easy to carry, easy to shoot, and they gun stays out of the way.

  4. Tam Says:

This is obviously some new definition of “latest fad” with which I am unfamiliar.

  5. Matthew Carberry Says:

    Well, latest in geologic time.

The horror, the horror! Then it’s like that just about anybody could have a gun, and they wouldn’t even need to live on a ranch or write for gun magazines.

Weak compared to other acceptable defensive rounds, true. But with modern ammo it still has sufficient ballistic performance to be acceptable, even if only barely.

Hence the popularity of low powered rounds. Easy to carry, easy to shoot, and they gun stays out of the way.

All three of which contribute to the most critical factor when you need a gun: Have a gun.

    There is only one 10mm.

And it is a beast of a round.

What are we supposed to use, harsh language?!?!?

I remember this game. It is sort of like Calvin Ball, where the rules change any time to any new thing.

  11. M Gallo Says:

When that guy has the credibility of Dr. Roberts in terminal ballistics I’ll give a shit about what he has to say. In the meantime, I’ll carry any of the pistol rounds listed as acceptable by Dr. Roberts, which include offerings with similar performance from the major defensive handgun calibers, and tell that guy to kindly get back in his lane.

  12. Sigivald Says:

Jake wins – underpowered gun beats absent gun every single time.

A Taurus PT25 you have on you will out-shoot and out-stop a .357 you left at home because it’s too big and heavy [or punishing because it’s tiny and light].

(The Sheriff said “For defensive purposes, we need to be shooting the most powerful handgun round that we can handle accurately and quickly.”

Which is true – except that you have to include “and fits in a package you’ll actually be willing and able to carry”, if it’s for a carry gun.

For a home defense gun that you never take with you, you can be much more flexible.)

  13. JKB Says:

Carry what your police carry. Harder for them to use your weapon choice against you in any legal proceeding. Of course, if Chuck Norris is after you, get the biggest caliber you can lift.

  14. Geodkyt Says:

Yeah, Tam — the “latest fad” that just started, oh, about 20 years ago. . .

  15. Geodkyt Says:

The next “latest fad” — using a electronically based microprocessor with a WYSIWYG interface and a link to a global communications network to send text based messages to other people, with no charges at either end other than for access to the network (and sometimes, not even then). . .

  16. HL Says:

Carry what your police carry. Harder for them to use your weapon choice against you in any legal proceeding.

That makes you a wanna-be cop. Or worse, some sort of vigilante.

May as well wear a Concealed Carry Badge while you’re at it.

  17. SPQR Says:

HL, really? Unless you were going for satire, given the topic, that’s a pretty ridiculous comment.

  18. HL Says:

The media painted Zimmerman as those things because he was in the neighborhood watch. Imagine if he’d been toting a Glock 22.

The point is, if the media and/or prosecuting attorney want to demonize you, it won’t matter if you are carrying a Taurus TCP or a Glock Fotay. If you carry revolver in your pocket it will be called a Saturday Night Special. Carry what you can and will shoot the best and carry the most.

  19. Geodkyt Says:

    HL:

You can’t do anything about the press, but you CAN slap that shot right back into the prosecutor’s teeth, if you know how.

“Sir, I carry that because the experts – our local law enforcement – have determined that that is the safest and most effective combination.”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
