My wife is afraid the government will show up at my door because of things I’ve said on the internet. Probably because the government has already shown up at my door because of things I said on the internet.

The other night, on the bookface, I made a comment about Obama’s administration reversing restrictions on the NSA snooping through your emails and phone calls. And in response to that, I quipped that all I had to say was “allahu akhbar pressure cooker tea party airplane”, riffing on something once said here by NK. My wife saw the post and asked me if I was worried the government would show up at my house over things like that. I said I was not. Then, she reminded they already did that once.

Oh, yeah.

I should probably do a post about that some day.

Can you hip me on how to do that too? I already annoyed an ex-prosecutor doing book research, so that might have added some points to my tally.

Would be better if you think ahead and have the recording gear running when they arrive. Might be big on YouTube. Proceed with caution. Ed Cummings (BernieS) of 2600 Hacker fame had some still pictures of Secret Service agents that visited his employer. He displayed them at a Philly 2600 meeting and the Secret Service got upset.

Damn. I managed to maintain a security clearance while I was weblogging.

Obviously I was doing something wrong.

I wondered if I should give you a h/t but might as well be hanged for a sheep as for a goat, right?

I am reminded of the time I had a (very low level) security clearance to work at a government lab, and was informed by my boss that the last guy to use my lab space had been arrested for synthesizing LSD, and convicted based on the materials he signed out from the confiscated contraband storeroom, as well as the video of him working in the lab. My boss stated that he did not know if the cameras were still in the lab, or still active if they were.

I tried real hard not to so much as pick my nose in the lab for the 3 years I worked there.

Dang, when I was actively blogging the most I had an active clearance, working with the Army and the Missile Defense Agency. After I went dormant for a couple of years I got laid off and have not been in that field since.

Maybe they just do this stuff at random?

Did you stop blogging before Obama was sworn in?

  9. Archer Says:

@mikee: Do you think the boss might have been messing with you to KEEP you from screwing around in the lab?

Every job I’ve worked with a computer network worth the name has told me that Internet access is monitored and that misusing it leads to disciplinary actions up-to-and-including-termination. It’s NEVER stopped people from posting on the Book of Face (or the Space that is Mine, in its time), or getting on their web-mail accounts, or even (in a few cases) accessing HIGHLY inappropriate content, which makes me think that the built-in web filters don’t work as well as they think and/or the management doesn’t care as much as they profess.

@Archer Back in the early 1990s a series of Arkansas National Guard Officers got busted in the DC area, usually having something to do with pornography, child porn, or attempting to meet a minor at Pentagon City Mall. It was only a few of them really, but every few months one of those cases would come up and several in a row that made the news were Arkansas NG Officers.

Around 2008 I met a CPT from AR and mentioned it to him, he turned around and told me he got “briefed” before going to the Beltway to be extra clean on the computers, but he did not know why or the history.
