Tactical facepalm

A bulletproof whiteboard for schools. Or, you know, put armed guards there.

When I was in elementary school we had bulletproof nuns in full uniform. I didn’t know my first grade teacher had hair on her head until halfway through the year, when some slipped out past her headgear.

Oddly enough, no gun issues in 8 years of school there.

Those whiteboards were defeated about 500-600 years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flail_(weapon)

So, you hold that up and hope he doesn’t shoot above it or below it.

So, you hold that up and hope he doesn’t shoot somebody else in the classroom not holding the one whiteboard?

So, you hold that up and hope he just decides to stop shooting?

I don’t think the bulletproof whiteboard is stupid. I do think only having a whiteboard as your plan is blindingly stupid.
How is this supposed to stop a determined shooter?

  4. Motor-T Says:

    Oh, I forgot one.
So, you hold that up and hope he isn’t using a rifle?

Motor-T, the salesman spokesman says that it handles all “assault weapons”. I can only assume he means AR-15 which I further assumes means 5.56 or .223. I had to carry and wear US Army PBA and the plates for 7.62 were much, much thicker than the items shown in that video. Maybe they are using more sophisticated material than our military. If so, I would prefer that we give/sell those items to people who are more likely to be shot at like soldiers, marines, and pizza delivery drivers.

On the basis that the best defense is a good offense, will the whiteboard come with serrated edges for when it is used to beat the attacker upside his head?

  7. Alien Says:

@Motor-T – I think the shooter’s actions will be determined by what is written on the whiteboard.

My vote would be for “the teacher behind you just shot you several times with his gun.”

I bet those things work great in universes where physics doesn’t apply and the bad guys only fire one shot. Not to mention that tilting it back a bit would direct spall and fragmentation straight into your face.

Okay, the magick whiteboard kept the bullet from penetrating, but where does the designer of this think the energy of those striking bullets is going?

  10. Tremaine Says:

My point exactly. I would like to see a test done on one of those that uses the amount of force imparted on a whiteboard by various shotgun and handgun loads, since that is all that they are rated for, to find out whether or not a user could hang onto one after taking a hit.

Like a fig leaf, eh? How very Biblical.

  12. Beaumont Says:

@rick: and I bet that the poor slobs who might use one will hold it ABOVE the fig-leaf area.

  13. NUGUN Blog Says:

Boards should be a large board against the wall. Essentially, a class room should have a door that can be secured and a barrier. This would provide a safe area. And honestly wouldn’t cost too much.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
