A reminder

It’s open carry weekend.

  1. Rivrdog Says:

Not here. Preemption only applies to CHLs in OR, so all the cities in the blue quarter of Oregon have banned it.

  2. Classical Liberal Says:

Not in Texas either, we aren’t an Open Carry state.

  3. D2k Says:

    @Classical
We can still open carry longarms, just expect to get hassled as almost no one is aware.

  4. MrSatyre Says:

    I do it every day.

  5. Andy Says:

I’ve got better thing to do than stop around the park attention whoring.

  6. JB Miller Says:

    I open carried!

  7. Kevin Baker Says:

I open carried at last night’s Arizona State Rifle and Pistol Assoc. annual banquet, and I’ll be open carrying when I go to the grocery store this afternoon.

Just doing my part. And it’s too damned hot to carry concealed.

  8. DirtCrashr Says:

We used to be able to do it here (CA) albeit unloaded, but it/they scared the wrong white people and it got banned.

  9. Skip Says:

” attention whoring” pretty much covers it.

  10. Andy Says:

Wait, I did open carry today. I shot a steel match, so I was open carrying at the match. I don’t thinking stomping around the tot lot makes a decent political statement. It tactics like that, the Act Up/Peta/WBC like nonsense, that does no good.

  11. Cargosquid Says:

I was in the People’s Republic of Maryland instead of my Free State of Virginia.

The things I’ll do for a crawfish boil. Besides…way too much booze was flowing….

  12. Linoge Says:

Fortunately or unfortunately, I did not really leave the house this weekend, but I did quite happily openly carry while mowing the lawn.

In other news, who knew that “going to get groceries”, “running errands”, or “otherwise going about my life in a peaceful and quiet manner” constituted “attention-whoring”. Thank you so much, bigots, for making that clear!

  13. MrSatyre Says:

@ Linoge: Was about to write up a similar response, but you beat me to it.

Well, I’m off to do some attention-whoring now! Gotta call the press and make sure my crew is ready to follow me around town pointing and saying in loud whispers: “Hey, he’s got a gun! Look, everyone!”

  14. Andy Says:

@Linoge When you’re doing things for the sole purpose of getting people to look at you and pay attention to someone they’d other wise ignore – YOU’RE AN ATTENTION WHORE!!!

Having to organize outings is not going about your daily business. This whole open carry weekend was nothing more than a look at me weekend putting attention whoring on parade.

Yes, I am a giant card carrying bigot. I really hate you OC idiots and your stupid little stunts that are screwing over gun owners. How did this OC stunts work out in CA or MI? I don’t expect that you’ll respond. You guys always seem to fit the same mold. You stomp around with your 1911 in your Serpa holster as an attention grabbing stunt. You crave attention from a society which would otherwise ignore you. Looking over the different OC forums you all seem to have a minimal education, low skilled jobs, pot belly physique. You discuss things like how often you’re mistaken for the police and how you put someone in their place for asking about OC.

Here’s my best little story. So my brother stops in the Turkey Hill (mini market) in Kutztown, Pa. Now, my bother is a competitive cyclist (pro but not earnig a living from it) and he’s in all his gear. He sees a guy OC’ing, next to him in line. Now, there are gun clubs like every 100 yard here, so my brother asks if he’s heading out shooting or just finished up. This OC idiots respond was “None of your business. It’s my second amendment right.” So my bother, not being one to avoid confrontation, lets loose. He open up with “So you’re one of those gun owners. The guy who want to be an ass to everyone while telling people your furthering gun rights while you really need a class in PR and attitude. I asked simply because we may shoot at the same place, or you might tell me of a club I should think about joining. Instead your attitude tells me the places I should avoid and not have to deal with people like you.” He then paid for the goofs coffee and said “have a nice day being an ass to more people and maybe turning some on the fence people into anti gun people.”

  15. Rivrdog Says:

Andy, you used a nuke to swat a fly. That’s impolite. The discussion of how to acclimatize non-gunnies to our 2A rights has to be held. Your too-forceful put-down of OC tends to put you in the corner of 2A deniers. Unless you ARE a 2A denier, or a professional shrink examining personality types, your comment is out of order. BTW, the professional psych reviews wouldn’t publish a screed like yours, IMHO.

  16. Bob S. Says:

    Andy,

    What utter hypocrisy you show.

ow, my bother is a competitive cyclist (pro but not earnig a living from it) and he’s in all his gear.

So your brother is wearing ‘clothing’ that could get him arrested in many countries and in some cases definitely allows another person to determine his religion — confronts a person peacefully going about his business.

And you call OPEN Carriers Attention whores? Seriously?

I’ve seen what many cyclists wear and it can be very offensive to many people. Why didn’t your brother put on normal or decent clothes?

Is it possible he felt he was just going about his normal daily business and shouldn’t have to change what he was doing?

Maybe he was trying to get more people into the sport, eh?

  17. Barron Barnett Says:

@Andy, So me going about my business as I normally would is attention whoring? My wife going about our business as we normally do is attention whoring?

News flash there, Mr. Bigoted troll, because yes that exactly what you are, you dislike rights that you don’t exercise yourself and talk down upon those who do.

Know why I open carry? Because it’s easier and it’s simpler. Even if I’m carrying IWB, I don’t add extra shirts just to cover my gun. You know the “shoot me garments”. I’m so sick of idiots who think that they know the one and only way there is to carry a gun and that anyone who does differently is an attention whore. Guess what idiot, there are some places where open carry is the only option. I guess you just think those people are all attention whores too right?

As anyone who has ever open carried can tell you, the gun draws almost no attention. Which do you think gets more attention when I open carry? My HT ham radio, or my 1911 on my hip in plain view.

If you said my ham radio, you’d be right. So is my carrying a ham radio to talk with a friend who lives outside of cell service attention whoring?

People like you are all the same. “I don’t do it, I don’t want to do it myself, so screw them and anyone who does it is obviously in the wrong.”

After work today I’ll swing by Walmart and open carry, why? Because fuck you that’s why!

  18. Linoge Says:

    *cracks knuckles*

Well, it has been a while since I did a good fisking, so now is about as good a time as any.

When you’re doing things for the sole purpose of getting people to look at you and pay attention to someone they’d other wise ignore – YOU’RE AN ATTENTION WHORE!!!

Then very few people who openly carry are attention whores, by your own logic.

After all, you said if they do it for the “sole” purpose of attracting attention – that may be one of the purposes of openly carrying, but if you honestly believe that it is the “sole” purpose of most open carriers, then you are a blithering moron.

I openly carry because it is more comfortable for me, being of somewhat slim stature and not particularly liking having hard metal shoved into my hipbone every time I bend over or twist. I openly carry because I know I can draw faster from that particular carrying style than having to worry about concealment attire getting in the way. I openly carry because I like not having to worry about whether or not I am tucked in. I openly carry because I can dress normally, rather than dressing around the gun. I openly carry because sometimes it is just too damned hot to try to go concealed, and I hate sweating all over my gun. I openly carry because it is too easy to demonize those law-abiding citizens who lawfully bear arms if no one really knows who any of them are, but if you see your neighbor, your co-worker, your friends – people you know to be rational, caring, mature human beings – carrying firearms, it is harder to buy into the propaganda spread by anti-rights cultists. I openly carry because I genuinely enjoy helping those curious folks understand that open carry is, in fact, 100% legal in Tennessee. I openly carry because a right unexercised is a right lost.

And to step out of my own shoes for a moment – something you seem mentally incapable of accomplishing – what about those folks who are unable to lawfully bear arms in any way except open carry? Delaware, for instance, is a “may issue” state when it comes to concealed carry permits, but open carry is 100% lawful without a permit, and judges can deny your (absurdly expensive and complicated) application for any reason they desire. I dare say that constitutes a wholly-compelling reason in and of itself.

Given that people paying attention to me was only two of the reasons I mentioned above (and there are more reasons, I am just too lazy to type them out), I am, by your own definition, not “AN ATTENTION WHORE”.

    You fail.

Having to organize outings is not going about your daily business.

If you would have done what the outing was organized to do anywise, yes, yes it is.

This whole open carry weekend was nothing more than a look at me weekend putting attention whoring on parade.

Yes, because doing what I do normally every day when I carry a firearm, or every day when I leave the house, or every day when I mow the lawn, is obviously a “parade” event.

More to the point of your idiocy, no, that was not all it was. Instead, or, if you like, (and I do not really care if you do or not) in addition to, this weekend, as I understand it (I was not involved in it in any way aside from a participant who would have openly carried anywise), was intended to encourage people to try something they might not have otherwise considered or felt comfortable trying. Why is that so very unacceptable to you? Why is the notion of grown adults making their own decisions and trying new experiences such a despicable thing to you?

What a hateful, narrow-minded world you live in.

Yes, I am a giant card carrying bigot.

Well, the first step to correcting a problem is admitting it.

Something tells me you will not move on to the other steps, though…

I really hate you OC idiots and your stupid little stunts that are screwing over gun owners.

So you have an emotional, visceral, and negative reaction to law-abiding citizens peacefully and lawfully exercising their Constitutionally-protected rights, and due to that reaction, you think that those people should be forcibly stopped from exercising those rights? When your ideological brethren are some of the worst anti-rights cultists out there, you are doing something wrong.

Personally, I challenge you to highlight a single instance of my openly carrying that has “screwed over” anyone. Go for it. Most of my interpersonal interactions while openly carrying are documented on my site – feel free to dig through the archives.

Or, y’know, you could just admit to being a stereotyping asshole. There is always that option.

How did this OC stunts work out in CA or MI?

Having done my time in the People’s Republic of Kalifornistan, I know, full well, how ludicrous it is to attempt to compare that state to pretty much any other state in the Union, especially when it comes to firearms. For Heaven’s sake, there is legislation afoot to ban the “Bullet Button” from the state – by your “logic”, we should be running around pointing incriminating fingers at all those “dangerous” souls who had the temerity to attempt to own AR-15s (one of the most common rifles in the country these days) in a state that simply hates them.

I will be waiting, patiently, for you to lead that charge.

As for Michigan, I honestly do not know to what you are referring – so far as I can tell, the state has allowed lawful open carry, and continues to do so.

    I don’t expect that you’ll respond.

Well, your assumptions have made a royal ass of you. Congratulations at that!

You guys always seem to fit the same mold.

Hm. It would appear as though getting you to admit to being a stereotyping asshole would be somewhat superfluous at this point.

Also, only males openly carry? Fail.

You stomp around with your 1911 in your Serpa holster as an attention grabbing stunt.

Actually, I generally carry either a Smith and Wesson 686 SSR in a leather-and-carbon-fiber OWB holster custom fabricated by Michael of Evyl Robot Holsters (I really do need to photograph it one of these days; it is quite attractive (I was too busy doing a review I was semi-late on this weekend – excuses, excuses.).) or a Walther PPS in a leather-and-stingray OWB holster by the now-closed Little Bear Holsters.

And having lived in apartments or dorms for far too many years, I do not “stomp”, sorry. My wife, on the other hand, freaks our cats right the hell out…

You crave attention from a society which would otherwise ignore you.

Apparently you have never met me, and I dare say I am the better for it. In the flesh, I am a quiet, unassuming, deferential individual who shies away from the limelight as much as possible and is content to muck around in the background and get the job done while other people get to prance and whatnot. But, hey, that “assumption” and “stereotype” thing just keeps biting you in the ass, does it not?

Looking over the different OC forums you all seem to have a minimal education

I graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelors of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and I hold a Surface Warfare Officer qualification from the United States Navy. And those are just the big-name items.

    low skilled jobs

I used to be responsible for the safe navigation, operations, and maintenance of multi-million dollar warships operating in hostile waters, and I am currently in charge of a stupidly complex database with equipment and access points spread across a stupidly large geographical area working with somewhere around 10k users a month.

    pot belly physique.

I am 6’2″ and 170 pounds. According to Oleg Volk, I have something of a pudge (probably due to my frankly shitty posture), but given his normal photographic models, I am not sure if he is the best judge of an average body. In any case, my combined training in kung fu and chung-do-style tae kwon do seem to be doing something about keeping me more-or-less in shape.

You discuss things like how often you’re mistaken for the police

It has never happened to me – the mistake-ing or the discussing.

and how you put someone in their place for asking about OC.

I will come back to this point in a moment.

    Here’s my best little story.

That is nice. You took one, single interaction with one, single open carrier – granted, a stupid one, on both counts – and extrapolated it to be the guide for how you believe hundreds of thousands of people behave.

You, sir, are that blithering moron I was referring to earlier.

Now, I am going to share some “little stories” of my own with you:

The very first time someone asked me about my openly carried sidearm – and this was about six months after I started doing so – it was a Canadian who was genuinely curious about the practice and we had an educational conversation about it.

When I openly carried to our neighborhood picnic, I got to talk with our neighbors as to what they carry and own, and even discovered some of our city’s aldermen carry.

Some folks have even expressed appreciation that I openly carry – in fact, more than a few have (which, by the by, officially puts asshole bigots like you in the minority).

The cops around here do not care.

Another handgun carry permit holder here in TN found out that open carry is legal through my example.

I openly carried at a local comics-and-games shop and now the proprietor and I are on a first-name basis and discuss related topics every time I drop by.

And those are just a few of my stories – I tend to keep notes.

In closing, you are wrong (a lot, in fact), your entire “argument” (to use that term very loosely) boils down to nothing more than one ill-conceived assumption after another, you spread fallacious stereotypes, you are and admit to being a narrow-minded bigot, and your entire demeanor, methodology, and attitude remind me of nothing more than a Mark 1 Mod 0 anti-rights cultist, only you are worse because you actually (well, supposedly) own firearms and should know better.

So with that groundwork laid, remind me again why I should give a flying squirrel’s left testicle what you think of me and my methods of lawfully, peacefully, and respectfully exercising my Constitutionally-protected rights?

  19. Barron Barnett Says:

Andy get’s fisked by Linoge! All I can say is, DAMN!

  20. Robb Allen Says:

Open Carry – It gives Sarah Brady AND Andy the vapors!

  21. Joe Huffman Says:

It’s been a couple years so I expect some people have forgotten and others are new. So rather that everyone getting all upset about it why not just read the old drama? Here is a fairly complete compilation of the debate.

The bottom line is, “Let’s not be so stupid as to think the same solution is appropriate for every situation.”

And that applies to all sides in the debate. Please chill and spend your time doing something more productive than infighting.

  22. Rivrdog Says:

Joe, is it really IN-fighting? On your own advice, question the base assumption.

  23. Joe Huffman Says:

@Rivrdog, I’m about 90% on Linoge’s side. But I question the wisdom of the escalation.

  24. Sparky Says:

I think little Andy needs to borrow his brothers helmet.

  25. TCK Says:

So, let me get this straight Andy. Your brother goes up to a complete stranger and starts asking invasive personal questions, gets told (quite understandably) to mind his own business, then decides to blow up and start denigrating the other guy, and we’re supposed to believe that OC’er is the loudmouthed asshole?

  26. Ted N Says:

Andy, you and your brother are both assholes.

  27. markofafreeman Says:

Wow. I missed most of the drama.

@Joe Huffman, on the wisdom of escalation, are you referring to raising the attention level to the anti-rights cultist like Andy?

Check my comment to Caleb’s Can we stop talking about open carry please post and Linoge’s subsequent QotD credit.

Please keep in mind that, (at least from what I’ve seen — please enlighten me if there is any contrary evidence), it is always those who are against open carry, or talk incessantly about how they have misgivings or insist that we follow certain behavioral guide lines that they decide are correct; it is always them who attack us.

You want this escalation to stop? Tell you what (and this is really directed at Andy et al rather than you, Joe): You first. Unc posts a simple reminder about the open carry weekend, and Asshole Andy goes all Brady on us. Folks like Andy need a serious verbal drubbing. And we, here will provide that well deserved drubbing. HE is doing more damage by giving the core arguments of Brady and buddies more street cred among those on the fence than anyone being an idiot while carrying openly.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
