Mob violence

A mob of black people attacks a couple of white people, beating them. It was unreported in the news for a couple of weeks, probably because the skin color of the attackers didn’t fit the narrative. And, maybe, because it resulted from the existing narrative.

See, when Martin was shot, the press wanted to create this dialogue on race relations in the US. Now, not so much.

And, when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

Also, what caliber for angry mob? I’m going with 9mm due to increased capacity.

  1. Too Many Zombie Games Says:

On most angry mobs of neighbors, any caliber that goes BANG should work.

Just make sure the guy at the front of the mob goes down hard, and shout out, “Who’s NEXT?”

  2. Nate from Ogden Says:

Kel-Tec Sub-9 from under the seat in it’s zippered bag. Folded up it’s only 16″ long, unzipped and unfolded there’s 90 rounds of hardball at the ready.

    That’ll work.

  3. John Smith Says:

Go with 10mm for increase incapacity…

  4. Ed Says:

40 mike mike. one shot, many kills.

  5. breda Says:

    I want a flamethrower.

  6. ben Says:

IIRC the best part about the story is that the two victims are employees of the local newspaper that ignored the story. Har.

  7. Cargosquid Says:

    Breda wins.

I did a detailed article a few months ago on the changing urban self-defense environment:

    http://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com/2011/09/changing-urban-self-defense-environment.html

I’ve gone to 9mm. for the same reason you cite. (So has Tamara of View From The Porch.) Ammo selection is important, though. I use Winchester RA9TA. Hot stuff!

  9. Bubblehead Les Says:

    Mob Survival 101.
    A) Don’t be there if at all possible. Running Away means you get to see your Family that night.
    B) If one CAN’T run away, or there are Innocents who could be hurt stuck in the path of the Mob (think of a Wheel Chair Person stuck on the Street), find an alcove/wall and put your back against it and go on Defense.
    C) Mobs are NOT Zombies, so don’t worry about Head Shots. Center Mass is Fine.
    D) For Mobs, I recommend any Quality Semi-Auto Pistol that takes Higher Capacity Magazines, and IF you carry 2 (i.e. “New York Reload”), then try to use pistols that take the SAME Magazines. You might have a Gun Break (remember Murphy’s Law).
    E) A second Pistol also allows you to arm someone else.
    F) If you carry only one Pistol, try and have at least ONE Higher Capacity Reload. As Clint Smith once said “Do you expect the Ammo Fairy to do an Air Drop Resupply on you in the Middle of a FireFight?” But be Practical. 30+round Glock mags are nice, but hard to carry concealed. Glock 17 mags backing up a Glock 26 is a good way to carry, IMHO. And no, it doesn’t have to be a Glock. Just make sure YOUR Pistol of Choice is Reliable.
    F) Long Guns are better, but you’d probably need to be a Shop Keeper to use it. Think of Koreatown during the Rodney King Riots.
    G) And get the hell out of there ASAP. We’re talking Surviving a Mob, not Dispersing a Mob. That’s why we have Cops, the National Guard, and the Military. Let them handle it.

    YMMV, of course.

I like Oleg’s choice, but I’d still prefer a 203 or one of those Milkor grenade revolvers.

  12. aeronathan Says:

Dealing with a mob is a matter of psychology. People feel like nothing will happen to them in a large group, that it will always be the other guy.

The trick is to make them realize that while yes, they might get you, you’re going to get some of them too and in the process, make them think about whether they really want to take one for the team.

Fact is, most Joe Sixpacks don’t want to take one for the team and will back off when presented with the prospect. And the small percentage that are willing to do it, well you drop them first….

  13. Brian Says:

Someone didn’t read Derbyshire’s recent article.

    1. Stay in the car.

    2. Keep moving.

    3. If not moving, start moving.

    4. Drive through/over the mob.

    5. If there was any violence, injuries, or damage then call the police from a safe location.

    6. Regardless what the police say, do NOT return to the scene.

  14. Roger Says:

Bubblehead has the best answer with ‘A”. “Don’t be there”.
Can you imagine the furious result of an armed citizen protecting himself & his family from a mob?
30+ rounds of 9mm hollow points? 24 rds of .45acp hollowpoints? 60 rds of .223 JHP?
The media would be foaming at the mouth as would all the usual racist fools.
Not saying that I would do anything different were I caught in a mob situation. My life and my familys life comes first. But a half a dozen (or more) dead bodies and a few more with wounds would certainly please the bloodthirsty jackals of the media and anti gun cabals. Just remember, that each and every person in that mob would be alter boys, sweet loving family men / women, peace loving gentle people that NEVER would hurt as much as a fly.

Submitted sadly as I note that our society has degenerated to this level. And yes, my ammo stocks are high and my marksmanship is well polished, I will not be a victim.

  15. John Smith. Says:

Fal or G3.. Your pistol should be what you use when you are out of rifle ammo and the bayonet/buttstock have broken off. What would stop a crowd quicker? You pulling out a pistol and opening up or pulling out a rifle and opening up…

  16. Stranger Says:

From those who have been confronted by a mob – the mob is as brave as its most cowardly member. So a random shot is almost as good as taking down the mob leader.

The problem with “spray and pray” is that once you hit someone fleeing the scene your future is toast. You are fresh meat for the legal system, no matter what the law says.

And yes, confront no one but do defend yourself. Stay in your vehicle, and keep moving. Through the mob if possible, over mob members if necessary. If you are singlefoot, move and shoot now, call the cops later. And do not return to the scene of any confrontation regardless of who is giving the orders. Go to the cop shop instead.

If you have run over someone, or shot someone, or shot at someone, call a lawyer on the way to the cop shop. Pick the lawyer now, keep his number on speed dial. Meet him at the cop shop if possible.

Mass instant immolation wins every time.

  18. Stretch Says:

Alertness, Avoidance and, if necessary, Aggressiveness.

    .38 Super vs. .45acp vs. 9mm vs. … anything!
    But something rather than nothing.

  19. JD(not the one with the picture) Says:

    One mob, one minigun.

  20. Sigivald Says:

Also, what caliber for angry mob? I’m going with 9mm due to increased capacity.

Well, if you know in advance that it’s probable/likely/not-unlikely, I say “rifle caliber, ideally belt-fed”.

But for the case at hand of no advance knowledge, 9mm or .40 sounds good, yes.

And Les’s advice is the best. Mobs are bad juju – avoid if at all possible.

  21. Cargosquid Says:

    For mobs?

    Grapeshot, of course. It’s tradition.

  22. treefroggy Says:

P14/45 with NATO ball. When over-penetration is a GOOD thing.

  23. Lyle Says:

    .223 and a C-Mag, or cheapo 7.62 x 39 and a few Euro 75 round drums… There are lots of good choices.

  24. Darrell Says:

American 180 on rock and roll.

  25. Kristopher Says:

He was already behind the controls of the most deadly weapon there.

His own automobile. A car has many times more foot-pounds than a pistol.

If a mob attacks, drive off. If some of those mobsters get in front of your car, put it in low gear and drive over them.

  26. bigcatdaddy Says:

How about a gauge? As in 12…. kel-Tec KSG!

  27. Phelps Says:

Belted .50 BMG, but the government abridges our right to the tools to use it properly.

  28. Critter Says:

mobs are not composed of heros. if one is in a situation that one must use a firearm (as opposed to an automobile) usually the first shot will send them scattering. you see, rioting is fun, right up until things go *bang* and then they’re no longer fun. .44 mag makes a particularly loud bang.

  29. Will Says:

    @Les:

for G):”And get the hell out of there ASAP. We’re talking Surviving a Mob, not Dispersing a Mob. That’s why we have Cops, the National Guard, and the Military. Let them handle it.”

The only way to survive a mob is to disperse it, which is why you shoot.
If the cops, Natl Guard, or .mil are already on scene, one would hope they would deal with it. Although, judging by the King/LA riots, don’t expect the cops to be proactive. Most likely, they are going to be where the mobs AREN’T, as a matter of unofficial policy.

  30. spud Says:

Hell just a 22 WMR by NAA in each hand, loaded with birdshot oughta do the trick. Between the roar of those little things and the squeals of pain, the crowd will be running for cover. Any stragglers you take care of with a 45 pulled from under ur arm he he…

  31. AntiCitizenOne Says:

    Apply chainsaw generously.

  32. Roadkill Says:

Nuke them from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure. A handy blade might be advisable, too. Might as welll take out a few when you get dogpiled. Something with a subhilt or ring guard. Retention is your friend.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
