In Soviet Russia

Defending your family is a crime: Man stabs 3 invaders to protect family, may face life for murder.

Four armed men run into a guy trained in the army to knife fight. He kills three.

never bring a knife to a gun fight…unless you’re this guy.

I don’t know Russian law. I know Greek law which is based on the Napoleanic Code. Self-defense in a homicide is not a defense as under the common law. It is mitigation. It reduces murder, a crime, to manslaughter, a misdemeanor (for as close a translation as I can). They are different cultures, with different histories, and different ways of controlling their citizens.

“They are different cultures, with different histories, and different ways of controlling their citizens.”

And all of them are wrong.

Right? Wrong? Law is not based on philosophy. It is based on experience. And prejudice.

  5. Todd Says:

Right, Wrong. How about Just stupid. As any system which punishes the victims for defending themselves. It’s almost like government sanctioned crime. “Oh, too bad that criminal we cannot find killed all those people. But, thank goodness none of the victims harmed or kill him. Cause that might create less victims.”

This is what the Antis here want.

They suceeded with it in the UK, and lord knows how many other god-forsaken holes.

    Remember Anti-Freedom, not Anti-gun!

Napoleonic code. Guilty unless proven innocent.

The man will probably walk, but will go through hell first.

  8. Kristopher Says:

Weer’d: In the UK, parliament has actually criminalized self-defense. In Russia, self-defense is still an allowed legal defense.

If you have to defend yourself in the UK, take the perp’s wallet and just walk away. If you get caught, claim you were robbing him. You will get in less trouble.

    Next time comrade,

    Stab, shovel, shut up!

  10. Jailer Says:

Stories like this make me glad I live in a country where defending oneself against a violent attack doesn’t come with the penalty of persecution and prosecution.

    Ummmm, wait a minute…….

This may be the case, but it ought not to be so. Such is willfully short-range, unpricipled “thought”, a.k.a. pragmatism.

If the physical sciences followed that lead, we’d still be riding horses around, and blaming “bad air” when we got sick.

  12. MrSatyre Says:

Nice to see they’re adopting a more Western approach to justice! “If you’re a victim, you’re going to jail!”

  13. Gnarly Sheen Says:

    Let’s play a fun game!

    1. Reread the article and replace “Russia” with “New York,” “Washington D.C.,” or “England.”

    2. See if it still seems surprising.

  14. Paul Says:

Gegham Sargsyan can defect to TEXAS.

Here he would be a hero and welcome to many peoples table.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
