In Iowa

House democrats leave to protest pro gun bills. And Ravenwood’s law is to blame.

As to the bills:

One bill would alter the state constitution to specifically include gun rights. Another would rewrite the law on “reasonable force” so that a person may use force — including deadly force — against someone who they believe threatens to kill or cause serious injury or who is committing a violent felony.

So, they’re upset that the bills would make them like the majority of the states?

  1. SGB Says:

…and they take their cue from the events in Ohio. these people are beneath contempt.

  2. Matthew Carberry Says:

That final question is what the Republican legislators need to keep hammering every time they are in front of a camera.

“These are not novel or untested ideas, “x” number of states have an explicit Constitutional RKBA and “y” number of states have identical “Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground” laws. None have seriously considered repealing either.”

Then ask, “Why do the Dems think Iowans will be less responsible than the people in all those other states?”

Stop letting the runaway Dems control the narrative by claiming they are resisting dangerous novelty. Put them on the spot to explain their apparent distrust of their own constituents.

  3. JD Rush Says:

I wish they would name it the “Jay Rodney Lewis” law after the guy that was almost railroaded here last week. Just proves that our Democrats care nothing for self defense, or gun rights.

  4. Tango Juliet Says:

The Left wants their victims!!! And almost to a man, they want to believe the average Joe is pretty dense.

  5. comatus Says:

I’m sorry SGB, what events in Ohio do you mean?
It happened in Wisconsin, and in Indiana, that I know of.
Great time to invest in a Tilted Kilt franchise.

  6. ATLien Says:

Bar the doors and don’t let them back in.

  7. RWC Says:

Oops. I said Utah instead of Iowa.

Republicans are going to pass it with or without them I believe.

  8. Bubblehead Les Says:

SGB is probably referring to the High School Shooting in Chardon, Ohio, comatus. But something tells me that someone is pulling the Dems Strings with all these Walk Outs. I smell something fishy wafting from DC myself.

  9. Sigivald Says:

Responsible legislators “protest” bills by voting against them, and/or speaking out against them – not by running away.

  10. Akatsukami Says:

Actually, we have good evidence that the majority of adult Iowans are out-of-control morons that shouldn’t be trusted with a used paper match, let alone a firearm: Obama carried the state in 2008.

  11. GayCynic Says:

You know…the House there still has a quorum. Shouldn’t this just increase the legislative pace? And as long as the Dem’s are off pouting in their secret corner, might as well pass everything else they’ve objected to in the last couple of decades…

  12. Kristopher Says:

Akatsukami: Obama carried the nation in 2008 by 52%.

The 50% of folks have a below average IQ, by definition.

That leave 2% that we should blame … and they live in every state, not just Iowa.

  13. Rick Says:

“This morning we found out mid-morning that they intended to alter the Iowa constitution today to eliminate all gun laws. All gun laws regarding transporting, carrying, acquiring. All gun laws, gone. …” McCarthy said.

    Hyperbole much?

  14. Brad Says:

    Rick

Just the Dems proving once again that they are the party of extremism when it comes to gun-control. What a surprise.

  15. JD Rush Says:

So someone told McCarthy the endgame. Duh. BTW both bills passed the Iowa House tonight. Party line vote. The Senate will be the real fight. The Republicans will have to pull some serious stuff to get it past the Dem Senate leader. Unless he suddenly changes his mind. He did let shall issue pass in 2010.

  16. Kristopher Says:

    Rick:

Eliminating all gun laws actually sounds like a damned good plan.

Keep felons in prison long enough for their crimes, and it might be workable.

We should thank that Iowa Democrat for this suggestion, and get to work on it.

  17. MarkJ Says:

    Democrat flee-bagging: It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

  18. M. Report Says:

    Heinlein’s Law:

No action, Civil or Criminal, may be taken
by anyone or on behalf of anyone injured
or killed while in commission of a felony.

  19. Sockmonkey Says:

As far as I’m concerned, lawmakers who leave town to avoid a vote have abandoned their office and should be turned out forthwith.

  20. Alan Says:

@19 – Good point. What’s Iowa law say about abdication of office – how long can they be gone and still be Members of the House?

  21. Fred Says:

I predict that in the years ahead there will be more and more legislators leaving town for lesser and lesser reasons unless there are some rather severe penalties imposed to stop it dead…

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
