Hadn’t seen it in years but I saw that They Live was streaming on Netflix (and it’s free for Amazon prime members). And I watched it last night. Honestly, the premise of making people sleepy, unquestioning and stupid by shooting messages through the air seems to be unfolding in front of us but I don’t expect it’s aliens. We seem to have a handle on doing that all by our selves.

Exactly what John Carpenter was trying to say with this film. Putting on the glasses was a reverse metaphor for “open your eyes and see what’s really going on.”
The alien shtick was just a way to wrap his message in an entertaining package.
The protracted fight between him and Keith David wasn’t because of bad editing, indulgent direction or padding out the running time – it symbolizes how hard it is to make people think a bit about their world and see how things really are.
One of Carpenter’s better films, although Prince of Darkness is probably his scariest.

I liked that movie as a kid. I watched it again recently as well, and I realized that the meme “I am here to kick ass and chew bubblegum” almost certainly got it’s start here. You used to hear that one a lot in the USMC.

BS – free tv is one of the very few free, in all respects, sites left in the ‘net, but hey, y’all’s phukin loss.
In the last 3 day’s I’ve found 4 of my regular viewing & DL’ing sites shut down by gov.phuku, and am thankful for freetv.
