Defending the Judge

Someone did it. The only thing I know of that the Judge has been practical for is a friend of mine who hunts rabbits with his.

My uncle uses his to blow crows off the deck of his houseboat, and it’s hard to argue with that.

I carry a Public Defender Polymer. My own personal tests convinced me it is a viable choice for self-defense. I won’t argue that the small birdshot loads designed for full length shotguns are not very effective out of it, but the newer buckshot rounds designed for the Judge work just fine.
I am not a police officer or in the military, so a handgun is purely for close range self-defense. At less than 15 yards, the Federal 000 buck load will keep all four pellets in a tight group right to point of aim. My penetration tests using water filled 1 gallon jugs show the 000 buck will fully penetrate 4 of them.
If the .410 is still to light, 45 Colt from my gun group as well as I can shoot out to 25 yards. If 230 gr 45 ACP is acceptable, I can’t see where 225 gr 45 Colt at the same velocity (from my gun) would not be.

I think the Judge *might* be acceptable for snake defense *if* there were no such things as .38 special or .44 special birdshot…

  4. Barron Barnett Says:

Father in law has one and my wife’s uncle got one yesterday for his birthday.

The reason they both wanted it was for hunting purposes. More specifically for grouse while deer hunting.

Sorry to go here… but I agree with Michael Bane here… You shoot any critter in the face with birdshot a few times then the eyes will be obliterated… I tend to agree… Personal defense is all about stopping the fight, not killing the bad guy dead. Any of you tough guys want to take even one round of .410 birdshot in the face? ((Crickets Chirping)) Didn’t think so… Not a fan of the Judge BTW, just would like to see a little respect for people who may disagree with your point of view…

  6. weambulance Says:

JscottNH – Yeah dude, except you’re suggesting it’s plausible to make several face shots in a self defense situation to obliterate the eyes. I’m gonna go ahead and strongly disagree with you there. I’d analyze the choice of carrying 410 birdshot for probable effective range and viable target points on the human body, but really, why bother?

Your “who wants to get shot in the face” thing is some tired bullshit that I’ve grown heartily sick of hearing over the last decade or so. Would you be willing to take a 22 short round to the chest? If not, then would you say it’s a valid choice for self defense? I’d guess “no” on both counts, tough guy.

I don’t particularly want to get shot with a slingshot, a blowgun, a compound bow, or a 12-pounder Napoleon, but I’m not about to hang up my Glock 17 and carry any of those around for self defense either.

  7. JscottNH Says:

Well said Ambulance… And I agree… But completely discounting a Judge for self defense is getting old… Is it the best tool for the job? No… Is ita the all mighty gun from Max Payne? Hell no… But in the hands of someone who knows it’s limitations and takes advantage of it’s strengths? There are worse tools…

Having shot one I know the spread it has at short range, and having been in the stress of combat, I know that shooting a target in the face isn’t particularly difficult if you aren’t worried about getting perfect sight alignment… 5 rounds of 410 birdshot is going to rapidly change the ability of the target to press the fight…

Oops… forgot to mention that I have a little experience with this… In April 1989, I was working security outside in the parking lot of a club outside of Boston. A Gangbanger fighting with a guy over a girl decided to pull a H+R sawed off 12g single shot… He missed and hit me from 30 yards, give or take… My heavy leather biker jacket stopped the majority of the pellets… But I took 6, 5 in the v where my jacket didn’t cover… one just below my lip… The pellet was in my mouth… just a half degree higher hold and I wouldnt ever have been reading this…. Just my 2 cents…

Good luck getting a face shot in a defensive situation, and good luck explaining it to the cops and/or jury. Aiming for the head/face=bad juju.

I think it’s hilarious that the same people that think they can pick out the 15 square inches that will one shot stop a human because they have Excalibur (the5.56/7.62/ 9/10/mm/40/45/50 BMG Cal/12g) just as long as what THEY have confident in hand, but everyone else is an idiot… I’m sorry, but everyone will agree that it isn’t easy to bit a precise target in a dynamic situation, bit everyone also discounts something that makes it easier to stop the fight… Comeon aren’t we all on the same side here? Projudge or PreJudge?

  11. Jscottnh Says:

Oh yeah…. Gnarly… Stop reading Mas Ayoob… A shooting is justified or not… Take anything someone writes and preache about and that someone also makes money on with a grain of salt… No real legal president on that stuff in the past 20 years… If he offered his services as an expert witness for free because it was the right thing to do I would respect him… Stop drinking that Kool Aid…

  12. Jscottnh Says:

Sorry about the spelling errors… Btw… Not home and phone is quirky, doesn’t allow me to proofread… Ugh

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
