What’s the world coming to?

Five year old ‘attacks’ a police officer. The child is placed in cuffs, put in a police car and charged with battery. Now, I’m not excusing the kid’s behavior. But doesn’t it make more sense to just hold the kid at bay and calm him down?

At least he wasn’t pepper sprayed or tased.

And at least they didn’t sic the dog on him…

  2. breda Says:

Cop got his ass kicked by a 5 year old? I hope he’s the laughing stock of the PD locker room.

  3. divemedic Says:

That is what happens when parents and teachers cannot or will not instill discipline, and call the cops instead. Cops are less trained and equipped to deal with unruly children than are the parents and teachers, yet they are expected to raise your kids when you cannot.

Maybe we should be faulting the teachers and parents for not dealing with this, and passing it off on the cops. When I was a kid and got in a fight, the teacher handled it. Now, the teacher is afraid for his job or of being sued, so he kicks the can down the road to the cops. The cops then show up and do what cops do, and we blame them instead of the people who can’t do their own jobs.

Heck, now I just hate everybody. Bleh.

  5. John Richardson Says:

    It’s Bush’s fault.

  6. DAD Says:

I would say that there is a lot more handcuffing in this kids future.

  7. dustydog Says:

A 5-year can’t commit battery. A 5-year old doesn’t have the mental capacity to form criminal intent. At most, the adult in charge of the child might be criminally responsible.

  8. Sid Says:

Has anyone attempted to reach this child through his buttocks? My son seems to respond positively to redirection when I swing with one hand.

  9. Nylarthotep Says:

Lt. Frank Gordo is a demonstrable idiot. Not that the article gives any detail of why Gordo was there or why he found it neccesary to put his hand on the kid, but that doesn’t sound like it started as a means of restraint.

Gordo should be given a nice safe desk job where he doesn’t have to worry about threats to his authority.

  10. SomeGuy Says:

In Fairfax County, VA, they would have just shot the kid. Eventually, they would have a six month investigation that cleared the officer of any wrongdoing. After all, officer safety, etc.

  11. Jerry Says:

Don’t they make a kid strength in pepper spray?

I have a 5 year old. His hair is FIRE ENGINE RED. He’s a great little man, except for when he’s not. During a phase in the latter he can have toys/TV taken away (of which he only gets 1 hour of TV a day, maybe 2 if I’m blogging and lose track of time), time out, push ups, sit ups, running in place, and all the way up to a situation where the color of his rear matches the color of his head. That’s right. I spank my child until he cries, and then I do the same thing when he’s not looking. HOWEVER, due to these circumstances he says “Yes Sir, No Ma’am, Please, Thank You, Your Welcome, Excuse Me, and I Pooted”! He is in his first year of school and has been involved in one physical altercation… defending a little girl in his class from the bully/hair puller. As it was described to me, he asked the kid to stop (no dice), he told the kid to stop (still no dice), then he dotted the kid in the nose (JACKPOT). Now I made certain he didn’t get in trouble at school, after a very long one sided conversation with the administration, and now he knows that he needs to tell an adult FIRST. He learned this in front of his teachers. I also told him, in front of his teachers, that if he tells them and they don’t do anything… go back and dot the kid in the nose. Now, he and I have an understanding and the administration and I have one also.

The short version: It is completely and entirely the parents responsibility to morally mold their child into a productive citizen. The moment you rely on someone else is the moment you will be disappointed and the moment you fail your child.

In about two more years… the belt comes out if necessary.

I love my child more than anything in this world, but if he goes too far… I’ll make another one that looks like him and acts better.

I wonder how many people think I’m a complete monster. I don’t care, I just wonder.

    Or shot.

  14. SPQR Says:

Tar and feathers – went out of fashion too soon.

  15. Alex Augustine Says:

Perhaps the child was fat, that could explain things.

  16. jack Says:

What was it the kid did wrong? Any child with half a brain should act up when put into a public school prison. And when some traffic cop washout that “just likes to be around young boys” puts his hand on you, hell yeah I want my five year old to resist. And if HE continues the assault kick the f… some place vital.

Why did the teacher/admin. watch this assault and not come to the aid of the five year old victim being hogtied and kidnapped? Sad freaking country… we teach our children to worship a state-issued costume why now? Honestly, what value does teaching respect to a costume give our society? Civilized society existed for hundreds of years without standing armies of tax-collecting thugs to lord over the masses.

  17. liquidflorian Says:

School sends a Cop to bully a special needs child into behaving, when the know and refuse to pay for an IEP?! WTF?! Lt. Gordo should fucking resign. I do that to my special needs kid I’d be the one in cuffs.

  18. Marc Malone Says:

Of course, the judge dismissed the suit. He had no choice. The child cannot be held culpable, at all. In fact, as I understand it, a 5-yr-old cannot be arrested and charged for a crime, at all.

  19. Nate Whilk Says:

Remember this precious little snowflake from April? Cops use pepper spray on 8-year-old brandishing piece of wood trim.

  20. chuckles Says:

The child has a developmental issue, ADHD. The mother has been trying to get him classified as such by the school system. The school system resists doing this because of the budgetary issues (Special Ed students cost 2x or 3x more than regular students).

If you push an ADHD child into a corner, you can get a raging defensive animal, which is exactly what the cop did. Why the school allowed this to happen or even called on the police to deal with this is beyond comprehension.

I have been a parent to 2 Special Ed children and have seen schools resist dealing with Special Ed children at all levels. It is always about the money.

I hope the family of the little boy gets a good lawyer because this is child abuse of the worst sort.

  21. Sarge Says:

Only “Special Needs” this child had was a few cases of rosy buttocks before he was considered adequately civilized for public school.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

  22. Justthisguy Says:

Sarge, ADHD is real, but is ‘way overdiagnosed. A guy who goes by Gewehr98 on the net has it for real. You may have seen his comments around the gun blogs. He is recently retired as an AF officer, and was himself instrumental in persuading the DoD that it is a legitimate thing. He proved to his superiors that he had it under control and needed no medication. Grownups can be expected to control or compensate for their neural differences.

    Five-year-olds, not so much.

  23. Andrew Says:

When I was in Junior high, one day in a study hall a buddy of mine and I started be smart asses. The teacher watching the class was one of the gym teachers.

When he reached his limit, he told me to go to the principals office, in a very angry tone. He even stood by the door to open it for me. Nice!

When I got to the door, he grabbed my smart ass, slammed me up against the wall, and told me if I acted like that again, I would pay dearly. BTW, my feet were 1-2 feet off the ground.

Never acted up again in school. Never!

Took two hours for my eyes to shrink down from dinner plate sized to normal.

And the principal had a paddle, about two feet long and three inches wide. Was not a good business meeting.

  24. Zain Says:

My Dad used to say “The quickest way to get a child’s attention is by application of a parent’s hand to the child’s bottom”. The state and its CPS needs to get out of the business of raising children and Parents need to step up to the plate and shoulder their responsibility.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
