What is wrong with people

Couple forgets to pay for a $5 sandwich. Kids taken for 18 hours. You’d think at some point someone in position of authority would stop and realize how stupid this whole thing was. You’d be wrong.

Now wait a second. Your post said that a couple forgot to pay for a $5 sandwich. The article says that the couple forgot to pay for TWO $5 sandwiches. That’s $10! Hang the bastards.

But if a regular person kidnaps your children, they go to jail.

Not to defend the inexcusable actions of the police, but I have worked in grocery stores for 20+ years. you would be amazed by the number of people who “forget” to pay for the items they and their children eat while cruising the aisles. Of course the evidence is gone by the time they reach the registers.

*shrug* Well, there’s forgetting, and there’s FORGETTING. I seriously doubt this couple intentionally forgot to pay for the sandwiches. ‘Sides which, the mama’s pregnant.

Couple weeks ago the cashier at the local Dillon’s didn’t catch the pack of batteries in my cart, because it had gotten wedged under my daughter’s carseat. I went back a couple hours later to pay for them when I didn’t see them on my receipt. If store management had called the cops on me as they did with this family, there would’ve been frakking hell to pay – and not by ME.

Bureaucracies have PROCEDURES….which trump everything else. You can get in trouble for NOT FOLLOWING PROCEDURES! Follow them and you are immune to everything.

  6. divemedic Says:

So what would you have the police do? Leave the child standing on the sidewalk after the parents were both arrested?
If all it takes to not get arrested for shoplifting is to claim that you “forgot” to pay, it won’t be long before a large proportion of the population is “forgetting” to follow all kinds of laws.
Oops, I forgot to pay my taxes. Oops, forgot to put on pants this morning.

There are some basic concepts that bureaucrats/statists/leftists are incapable of recognizing, since said concepts are incompatible with their worldview. “Stupidity” is one of them. “Truth” is another.

Even if these people were the dumbest robbers ever ($50 in groceries paid for, and $10 in “stolen” Sammiches)

I don’t even see the point why the manager would call the Five-Oh when the couple offered to pay.

You have to detain the people, and wait for the cops to come, then file a report, plus have a police cruiser parked in your store’s fire lane which always looks shitty.

Unless this was the 3rd or 4th time these people “Forgot Something” and you knew you’d be wasting your time with these jerks every week/day.

My time is worth something, and if I can tell the people to “never let it happen again”, and have them leave with everything paid for, I see no reason to waist any more time no matter how unscrupulous they look.

  9. BobG Says:

Could have been handled a lot better; the manager could have accepted the payment they offered and told them not to come back. Sounds like the manager was an asshole.

I can’t give the couple the benefit of the doubt for their actions.

I’ve seen yuppies in high end luxury cars steal bags of chips from Subway. Park, enter the store, take a bag of chips, leave.

Some folks steal. Some of the folks that steal have the cash to buy, but steal anyway.

“Forgetting” to pay for something you ate in the store is a common form of theft.

The response from the store doesn’t bug me. Should a store play the game of “If you try and steal and we catch you, there’s no penalty for you, but if you do steal, it hurts only us”? That’s a loosing strategy.

  11. Gerry Says:

My ex sister in law who had multiple arrest and convictions for shop lifting always brought her kids with her when boosting.

She either used the I forgot or the kid must have put it there defense and got away with it about 75% of the time.

Sorry but I’m not buying the I forgot defense.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
