Excellent

In an update to Mast General Store posting no gun signs, reader Adam emails his correspondence with them. The stores have removed the no gun signs and are reevaluating their policy next month.

Good for them. I’ll be stopping by with a few dollars to buy some stuff some time soon.

Update: To avoid confusion, there is no link to it. It’s some email correspondence. Geez, you link all the time and then don’t and the sky is falling.

Update 2: Permission to post text of email:

Hello Adam,

First, I would like to thank you for your relationship with our organization over the years and taking the time to share your stories but mostly for sharing your concerns about our gun policy. Your passionate beliefs and statement will factor into our review of this policy over the next month or so. In the mean time we have removed all of such stickers from our entries.

Again thank you for your consideration to continue to support our employee owned organization and for your time on the matter.

In this economy, they had to be out of their minds to even consider alienating customers like that.

  2. Matthew Carberry Says:

Where is the update about them changing their policy?

  3. wizardpc Says:

Yeah I don’t see it either

  4. SayUncle Says:

All I have is correspondence from a reader and the company.

    post the correspondence

  6. Matthew Carberry Says:

I believe you, but can you put that up if allowed?

Cause the link leaves the correspondence at a big “Sorry pal, no dice”.

    Which harshes my mellow. =)

I will be posting the correpsondence later today, if Unc does not beat me to it :).

The sad thing is, they won’t do the right thing for the right reasons. It was only when they thought they’d loose money that they re-considered.

That said, I wonder which insurance company might’ve told them to post those signs?

  15. CaptDMO Says:

Um…how many folk in Mass. are allowed to publicly carry “guns” in the first place?

Sure don’t see too many signs like that (ABSOLUTELY MUST be respected)ANYWHERE in NH/VT. Of course, there have been “issues”.

  16. CaptDMO Says:

    Oops, MAST, not Mass.

  17. MJM Says:

Thanks for update. I appreciate what appears to be a thoughtful reconsideration of what had been a common knee-jerk reaction in the past. I saw nothing positive for Mast in posting, and only gain to quietly open the store again to “people like us.”
I am surprised to read that somehow posting was an insurance issue: perhaps a decrease in premium for the general commercial liability insurance cost.
Frankly, I doubt that, and suspect that maybe some anti-gun risk manager or broker is playing games with the minds of the people at Mast who buy coverage. I have never heard any agent say such and no of no endorsement or discount for businesses that post. If Mast’s management discovers that they got dysfunctional advice coming from somebody’s ignorant bias rather than from a true risk assessment, ….

That is the reason most retail chain stores post in the first place. It is also why most do not allow employees to carry. Insurance companies would rather replace the few hundred dollars taken in a robbery a thousand times rather than the millions of dollars they could get hit with if an employee or knowingly permitted customer shoots the wrong person.

They don’t have to pay as much if the employee or customer is killed by a bad guy because they have taken “reasonable precautions” against robbery and the killer wasn’t knowingly or negligently allowed to carry in their store. After all they POSTED SIGNS!

The flaw appears to me to be in the laws. There should be civil immunity built into carry laws including protection for the store/property owner if someone believes they are stopping a felony with a gun.

In Tennessee, this is not true. A posting does not alter your liability in any way.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
