Bad advice will get you killed

A few years back, I was having drinks with my dad and my sister. And she was going on about an Oprah episode in which they were discussing self-defense and, more specifically, rape prevention. She told us that, per the show’s expert, one thing you can do is get on your back and kick up. After all, your legs are stronger than your upper body. My dad and I quickly explained that that was one of the dumbest things we’d ever heard and not to do that.

Please stop giving bad advice. If you are serious about learning self defense, go to experts.

Also, totally anecdotal, but I was having an off-line conversation with someone about some women’s (namely gun nuts’ spouses) reluctance to carry and train with a firearm, a known and effective means of self defense. Yet, now, I’m struck by the notion that those same women would take the “bird beak” / cheerleader concept to heart.

Those techniques will get the girls killed, or knocked unconcious if the creep is a real dirtbag. They might keep a drunken frat boy off from them, but then really, will any of those girls be attacked by a drunken frat boy?

I would be equally critical if someone recommended the “bird beak” technique as the preferred method of dealing with Grizzly Bear encounters.

    Remember to shout “No!”

I got quite a chuckle 5 or 6 years ago when I was having dinner with a church group and they were talking about getting under your car if you were being attacked in a parking lot.

They were also dissing Charlton Heston, the NRA, the pro-2A movement and, of course, carrying a gun.

I let them know that I didn’t plan to be trying to squeeze under my car anytime soon and that I had a better antedote to being mugged than trying to get under my vehicle.

As the warden in Cool Hand Luke said, some people you just can’t reach.

A local radio host was talking about the recent canton, OH video where the cop went nuts on a CCW holder. The host knew nothing about CCW and was giving every suggestion equal weight. One caller said that a CCW holder should “pull their gun out and have it laying on the dash with the clip out by the time the policeman gets to the car.”

“Oh!” says Officer Strict. “He has a gun! I’d better shoot him before he points it at me!”

That video looks like they are doing the chicken dance. Are they at a wedding?

Sadly, it is sometimes difficult for people to realize what is bad advice. Because they’ve not done any serious thinking about self-defense, have not realized the mindset of the criminal class, and so can’t critically analyse advice.

I’m certainly not a hand to hand self defense expert but when I discuss this subject informally with women, I try to focus on mindset more than any actual physical technique.

I try to address the survival mindset which is to use every tool, every ounce of energy, to survive. To abandon limits, use every tool in reach, aim at the most vulnerable target (I usually emphasize eyes just because of the squimishness of people to attack them) and go all out to put the other person out of action.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
