The Norway Shootings

92 dead. Shooting lasted for an hour and a half. Took the police 40 minutes to get there. His weapon was referred to as a ‘machine pistol’. Pundits are already playing the game of pin the convenient political ideology on the nutjob.

Some are blaming gun control.

Calls for gun control, of course.

Neither would have made a difference.

The thing that gets me is that this man shot people for an hour and a half. And the people getting shot didn’t stop him? There were 82 of them. I’m not sure I understand how that could happen.

MRS notes the cultural differences.

  1. The Duck Says:

Well there were between 500-600 people on the island, but it appears the flock just hit panic mode, as that is what sheep do when the wolf comes calling

  2. Bubblehead Les Says:

BBC News says he was using “Dum Dum” Bullets, which, as we all know, the mere presence of which instantly kills every Human in a 10 Mile Radius. Worse than an Hiroshima-Strength A-Bomb, actually.

  3. Phelps Says:

I’ve seen pretty credible evidence that his facebook page was altered after he was arrested but before it was ultimately pulled down to include “christian” and “conservative” as attributes.

Still no indications who was behind it, though.

  4. OHIO SHAWN Says:

It is weird that no one rushed him and tried to tackle him. I know these were mostly kids, but still, you would expect someone to give it the ol’ college try and take him down. Makes me glad I volunteer as a chaperone for many of my kids events.

  5. Weer'd Beard Says:

Gun Free Zones Kill. All the gun control in the world won’t stop nut-jobs from getting guns.

They WILL keep you disarmed so your only options are to attack a guy with a gun with your bare hands, or hide under your desk and hope for a job offer from the Brady Campaign.

  6. chris Says:

Who was on the island to protect the children?

Seems like a failure of security to me.

  7. Some Jerk Says:

Actually, the island was a summer camp run for indoctrinating kids into the left-wing Labor Party. They were perfect victims, blaming themselves right up to the end.

  8. RWC Says:

Pretty sure the “machine pistol” was a Ruger Mini-14.

  9. Bryan Caskey Says:

What are the gun laws in Norway? I’d be interested to know if the average joe (or Sven) is allowed to have any ability to defend himself from a man with a gun.

Sounds like the cops were hours away when second counted.

  10. workinwifdakids Says:

Ummm, dude? They were mostly children.

    It was a kids’ camp.

  11. ketcom Says:

From his manifesto, he had full body armor. I wonder if he gave up because he ran out of bullets?

  12. SayUncle Says:

    They were mostly children.

    Ah.

  13. John Smith. Says:

He says he got his weapon from a drug dealer in prague… Big shock there… Criminals buying from criminals where guns are more or less banned.

  14. ATLien Says:

Bullshit. They were children like 17 and 18 year old males that are over 6′ tall are “children.”

  15. MSJ Says:

Waiting for call for a new AWB which if memory served, back in 94, did not prohibit the mini-14.

  16. workinwifdakids Says:

ATLien, all victims were between 14 and 19. I’ve yet to see a breakdown of the victims’ ages, nor have I seen a breakdown of the victims’ height.

Since you apparently have, produce them, or promptly shut the fuck up.

I mean, honestly: 15 year old girls treading water in the ocean, knowing they can’t outlast the shooter, forced out of exhaustion to head back to shore to be gunned down rather than drown. What’s wrong with you?

  17. Chris L. Says:

It was a Ruger Mini-30 from what I have been able to determine. That is what is in the picture but not one report list the actual firearm used.

  18. ATLien Says:

Hey workin, use your fucking brain. You don’t ever tell me to shut the fuck up, assclown. There are hundreds and hundreds of pictures from this, and you somehow haven’t seen any of them? I don’t know about you, but I have this ability I’ve developed where i can determine how tall someone is by their relation to other objects in the picture. I know, I know, that’s some sci-fi shit right there, according to you.

  19. Matthew Carberry Says:

Like much of Europe there’s essentially no private pistol carry in Norway, lots of private ownership, of long guns anyway, but a gun in the home does little good on a non-residential island (no homes to go get a gun from).

Being it was a camp for teenagers (most not probably eligible for gun ownership), and given it was being run by a political party I’m pretty sure was not “pro-gun” in any way, and given it was in Norway (see the cultural differences link above) I doubt they even considered having armed security.

  20. Beaumont Says:

Cultural differences aside, some things seem clear. A teenager with a target .22, or even an air rifle, might have been able to deter the killer. Maybe not stop him, but at least slow him down. Even a barrage of rocks would have helped. The photo of the girl on her knees, pleading for her life, twists my guts. The victims did indeed act like sheep, and, sadly, suffered the usual fate of sheep.

And the cops who took so long to respond? Put them in the cell with the killer.

  21. Oakenheart Says:

There, just like here, kids are trained from birth to “Let authority figures handle it”. That contributes to mass murder more than anything else. If children and adults were not coddled and were taught to respond instantly and with overwhelming force you would not have these huge body counts. Trained cowardice. That’s what it is.

  22. JH Says:

Where were the police? Wouldn’t much matter… first paragraph…
    http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/newsworldnation/927110-227/norway-begins-healing-after-shooting-rampage.html

“OSLO, Norway – Norwegians have always taken pride in their open, trusting society.
It’s a country where you might encounter the prime minister at the grocery store and offer a hug. Many police don’t carry guns and most government buildings are unprotected. Homicide is rare, with only a handful of gun-related deaths a year.”

    Apparently a little too trusting.

  23. workinwifdakids Says:

    Lighten up, Francis.

  24. Ash Says:

@Phelps, sure, and the conspiracy magically went back in time to post the killers 1500 page manifesto and video the day before the attacks…

  25. Ash Says:

    Post your ‘credible evidence’ please.

  26. Chris Says:

It looks like they did have “security” on the island.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/26/world/europe/26police.html?_r=2&partner=MYWAY&ei=5065

OSLO — When a man dressed in a police uniform began slaughtering young people at a Norwegian summer camp last week, one of the first to be killed was a real police officer named Trond Berntsen, who for years had worked in security at the camp.
Whether Officer Berntsen tried to stop the gunman is still being debated. But facing a man carrying multiple guns and ample ammunition, there was little he could do. Like most other police officers here, he had no weapon.

Reminds me of my thought on 9/11. How did the hijackers get guns on a plane?(they didn’t!!) Why didn’t anyone rush them? Now if someone tries to do something on a plane the passengers will react, but before 9/11 most folks would just take their chances on going to Cuba and waiting it out. If the police in Norway don’t carry guns, there is no way to stop this kind of thing. Either they will adapt and arm the police and maybe allow citizens to arm themselves, or they will assume it is a one time event and not change.

  27. someBitch Says:

omg are yall seriously trying to BLAME panicked CHILDREN for some mind fucked right winger shooting and killing them?? Why? What could they have done? Honestly I say I’d do this and do that when something like that happens BUT in all ACTUALITY I’d probably just run and hide my damn self.. Now people in Norway are culturally different from us Americans.. I don’t know the laws about guns over there but if the police don’t even carry weapons then I’d say they should change some laws or something.. You CANNOT blame children for doing what they’ve been taught and raised to think, behave and do in that situation.. Plus when children panic they usually act on instinct.. God damn show some fucking sympathy and have a fucking heart.. They’ve been through a great tragedy and don’t need dumbshits blaming the children who DIED for what happened to them!

  28. Oakenheart Says:

someBitch – I’m not blaming them. I’m blaming wastes of space like YOU who train them to be cowards and run away, and wait for someone else to handle it. You are a murderous cowardly piece of shit. Handle your own guilt fucktard. Sometimes you have to handle things YOURSELF. The whole train of fail starts when we punish people for defending themselves, and don’t teach children that YOU are responsible for your own safety. 92 dead vs maybe 12 if EVERYONE bum-rushed the shooter and stomped the shit out of him. Which is better? According to your sorry ass the outcome we got because everyone should be a stinking yellow coward LIKE YOU! go fuck yourself. It’s NOT the KIDS FAULT, it’s people like you who teach them to be COWARDS!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
