For the range bag

I got a J. Dewey MFG field kit for my 6.8 caliber AR-15. I have this one, actually. I’m impressed. Very compact, high quality. It’s about the size of a wallet and fits easily in a range bag or go bag.

I recommend it. And will be getting one in 5.56.

More to come after more use.

Have you tried the Otis kit?

  2. SayUncle Says:

    I have not.

  3. Jim Brack Says:

Can’t speak to the Dewey range kit (sounds like I need to get one), but have 4 Dewey rods and can say they are the best I have ever used.

  4. DirtCrashr Says:

All my rods are Dewey, the looong one for the Krag, the M1 Garand, and the AR – even the 1911 Colt.

  5. mariner Says:

I only use rods in pistols now, from the PocKit.

For rifles I use some variation of the Otis kit I linked above. They are available to fit in the grip of an AR-15-style rifle, or in a confusing array of other kits.

The only disadvantage I’ve found is the need to use their patches, but I’m OK with that. I have big pile of them.

  6. mason Says:

The advantage of the dewey kit is it’s one piece construction and ability to use standard patches. The only part you change is the brush.

  7. comatus Says:

Well, their smallbore jag doesn’t interchange with anybody else’s, ho hum. Can be a stressor on a bad day.

On the strong hand, there’s a lot of amusement to be had from giving that handle bearing a good spin and wondering if it will ever stop. Real Gun Valley quality.

  8. mason Says:

The jags will fit with the right adapters, i’ve never had a problem

  9. comatus Says:

Only a writer who connects two sentences with a comma, and doesn’t end with a full stop period, would read past “doesn’t interchange” straight into “the right adapters.”

YES! You need an adapter! Please remember to have it with you! The same Commercial Row vendors who don’t sell Dewey jags also don’t sell Dewey adapters!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
