For the children

Toys Я Us posts a no gun sign. The one here in Knoxville that I’ve been to, well, too many times is not posted that I recall.

    I don’t know if all the Ohio stores are posted, but a lot of them are.

  2. jh Says:

    TRU in West Knoxville IS posted. Has been since at least before Christmas season 2010.

  3. Alex Says:

    All the Cincinnati Oh stores are posted.

  4. Countertop Says:

    I open carried (didn’t plan to, but left my jacket in the car) last weekend at the one in Falls Church, VA (Bailey’s Crossroads). I don’t bother to check if it’s posted or not. If they want to aak me to leave, they can. They didn’t.

  5. MrSatyre Says:

    My local Manassas branch of Navy Federal Credit Union posted a no guns sign the week after I became a member. Can you taste the irony?

  6. mikee Says:

    In Texas this sign would not meet the legal standard for store signage prohibiting the concealed carry of firearms on the premises by a CHL licensee. I suspect whatever state this sign is in, it does not meet the legal requirements for such signage.

    So it is apparently Toys R Us marketing department, not their legal department, that posted this. Ignore it.

    The sign does not legally disallow concealed carry.

    A credit union I use has a similar sign (handgun silhouette with red circle + crossbar over it) on its front door. I asked the manager about it, pointing out the sign’s lack of meeting TX law, and she said that yes she knew that, as did several other CHL carrying employees, but that “building facilities” for the credit union insisted on posting it.

  7. mikee Says:

    On the other hand, in Tennessee you can be prosecuted for being armed when re-entering a business which is not posted correctly, if you have previously been asked to leave because you are armed. IANAL, thank goodness.

  8. RWC Says:

    Noticed that Buffalo Wild Wings in VA is posting a ‘no guns’ sign.

    Actually, the first one that I had ever seen.

  9. Tango Says:

    There was a hubub here in Utah over the TRU policy. They’re seemingly anti-LEO as well.

    “She told me that they would welcome a LEO if Toys-R-Us called an officer to the store for a law enforcement reason, but that police officers are not welcome as customers.”

  10. Ron W Says:

    “For the children” …to help provide for a more target rich environment?? That would be the reason to post “no guns”.

  11. Bubblehead Les Says:

    Do they still sell toy guns and G.I Joes? Sounds like they are willing to lose some money to those Customers who carry and want to buy their children such items. Wonder if the Board of Directors realize that such hypocrisy is costing them money?

  12. Tango Says:

    Bubblehead Lee, funny you say that. At the time of the UtahConcealedCarry.com thread, someone found boresights that TRU was selling.

  13. BornLib Says:

    @mikee
    It depends on the state. Here in Ohio, that sign, placed “in a conspicuous location,” would carry the force of law.

    @Tango
    That’s insane.

  14. Pol Mordreth Says:

    Thats the same sign that is posted at the Murfreesboro, TN location. Unfortunately, mikee, that sign carries the full weight of law here in TN. As of last year there is no ‘improperly posted’ defense. Any and all signs that convey the message that firearms are prohibited are valid. Fortunately, crossing one of these signs is just misdemeanor tresspassing, not anything that would cost you your permit.

  15. Gunmart Says:

    In my neck of the woods the Toys R Us is posted (with that same sign) but the Babies R Us across the street is not…. brilliant!

  16. PT Says:

    All of their Detroit metro areas are posted. I believe someone from the open carry . org crowd contacted their corporate management who said basically tough shit, we’re banning guns.

    Luckily I have no kids, and I will carry on the great tradition my parents started with me: Illegal fireworks and .22’s.

  17. aeronathan Says:

    Make’s me glad signs like that carry no legal weight here in AL. Until an actual person asks you to leave you’re golden and with a concealed weapon, well, what they don’t know won’t hurt ’em….

  18. BrokenTrace Says:

    I support the right to do what you want on your property, but I also support the right to not shop at your stupid store. I wish there were more gun friendly stores out there.

  19. Ron W Says:

    Against what other civil rights can businesses open to the public post?

  20. SayUncle Says:

    I dunno. Go in a Toys R Us with some Nambla literature and tell me how that goes.

  21. BornLib Says:

    @Pol Mordreth
    I thought gunbuster signs in TN required the language that they were posted under authority of Tennessee law and that possessing a weapon in an area that has been posted is a criminal offense. That sign doesn’t meet either of those requirements.

  22. Pol Mordreth Says:

    @BornLib: Not anymore. We lost that in the bill that gave us restaurant carry. Any signage is enforceable, now.

  23. Teke Says:

    The older Toys-R-Us in the Houston Burbs is posted with their poor attempt at a sign so faded it is barely reaedable anyway. Not TX legal. The new has no signs.

  24. Bryan S. Says:

    Thats why you make a few of these:

  25. wizardpc Says:

    @Pol:

    While the signage requirement was relaxed, it’s not true that “any sign is enforceable” or ” there is no ‘improperly posted’ defense. Any and all signs that convey the message that firearms are prohibited are valid.”

    For example, Randy Rayburn’s famous “No guns ever, free parking always” sign is not legally binding. Even a sign plainly stating “NO GUNS ALLOWED” is not legally binding.

    The requirements for a sign that contains text only may be found here.

    Unfortunately, using a simple circle-and-slash sign IS legally binding now. That greatly expanded the number of legally binding signs in the state overnight.

    All signs must be prominent (no 1″ sticker at the bottom of a corner window) and at every entrance.

    Also, violating one of the legally binding signs is NOT misdemeanor trespassing. It’s its own violation, and it’s a more serious one. Violating a legal sign is a Class B misdemeanor, while trespassing is a Class C misdemeanor. Now, it’s important to note that if you are caught carrying in a place that has non-binding signage, you are guilty of criminal trespass IF AND ONLY IF you do not immediately leave.

    It’s worse for us than it was, but it’s not as bad as you think.

  26. Pol Mordreth Says:

    Thanks Wiz. That filled in some of the detail I was missing.

  27. Lance R. Peak Says:

    RWC, the Buffalo Wild Wings corporate policy is that all corporate stores must have “no gun” signage posted. Franchised stores that are not corporate run are allowed to post or not based on their respective owner’s whim.

    I found this out in TX when I found the first BWW I had been to that was posted and talked to the manager about it.

  28. Tango Says:

    hahahaa…. CSGV is stalking me on the interwebs. Anywhere I post, they find something from it and post to their twitter account. They are mocking the guy that started the above TRU thread on Utahconcealedcarry.com a day after I posted it here… and it’s been a dead thread over there since September of last year!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
