Obama speaks on gun control

Actually, not too bad coming from a guy who was anti-gun before becoming president:

The fact is, almost all gun owners in America are highly responsible. They’re our friends and neighbors. They buy their guns legally and use them safely, whether for hunting or target shooting, collection or protection. And that’s something that gun-safety advocates need to accept. Likewise, advocates for gun owners should accept the awful reality that gun violence affects Americans everywhere, whether on the streets of Chicago or at a supermarket in Tucson.

That doesn’t fit the dehumanization of gun owners prevalent by the anti-gun side.

Heh: The forces of gun control must be weeping in the bathroom right now, because their BFF just broke up with them by Facebook.

  1. Tam Says:

    Man, are they gun-shy!

It’d be interesting to know if he’d have been bold enough to speak otherwise if last November’s elections had gone differently.

As it is, he’s already gearing up for the ’12 election; if he wins, lame duck Barry might speak his actual mind on the topic.

  2. Crotalus Says:

If you’re speaking of Obomination, I still don’t trust him.

  3. falnfenix Says:

sooooooomebody sounds like he’s talking out both sides of his mouth…

  4. John Smith. Says:

    Typical politician.. Talking without speaking…

  5. Huck Says:

I smell a lame attempt to get us folks who “cling to our guns and bibles” to think about voting for him next year. Ha! pigs will fly before that happens!

  6. Mike V Says:

The only change in existing gun laws that I believe is really needed is making mental health records subject to instant check and carry permit background checks. Currently under HIPPA they are off limits as I understand it.

  7. Steve in TN Says:

Huck beat me to it… I may cling to my religion and guns, but Obama is now admitting I do so with good reason and not bitterly.

  8. Rick Says:

Don’t mistake Obama’s middle of the road tack with his OpEd for him being a reasonable person. Obama takes the gun banner position that INSANITY and criminal behavior can be legislated.

Here’s reality, the actions of a psychopath can not be predicted or prevented. Law means nothing to the lawless. Law only limits those that would not break it in the first place (generally, laws can be wrong). Criminals and madmen have all the time to plan, gather tools and attack at the moment of their own choosing, this can NEVER be prevented. The only way to deal with criminals and maniacs is to be prepared to STOP them once they strike.

Gun control has historically been an easy way to create new bureaucracies and abuses of civil rights and most based on the flawed idea of controlling bad people with words. Obama supports that flawed idea.

  9. Fiftycal Says:

No, this is NOT “good news”. ObamMAO is putting up the smokescreen of being “reasonable”. Why it’s REASONABLE to get guns out of the hands of crazies by doing background checks. But “sellers”(not dealers)have to do background checks when they sell to someone thatis a “stranger”. And how do we REASONABLY do that? Why we register everygun like a library book and then the librarian/ATF can come by and check to make sure all those guns you REASONABLY have are checked out to you. No, this is just more of the inch by inch strategy anti-gunners have tried for decades.

  10. Tam Says:

    Huck,

I smell a lame attempt to get us folks who “cling to our guns and bibles” to think about voting for him next year.

It’s more to keep middle-of-the-road blue collar Dems who also happen to own guns from voting against him.

  11. Bubblehead Les Says:

If you can find a stashed Copy of B.Hussein’s Agenda.gov from before he was Anointed, ( Funny how it Mysteriously Disappeared off the Web after the Election) look up his TRUE Policy on Gun Control under the “Urban” Section. What Barry just said was a Lie, like always.

  12. Kristopher Says:

    Yep. He’s just politicking.

He’s an anti. He’s just throwing a bone to the Bradyites, and trying to do it without scaring blue collar workers into voting for their guns.

  13. Cargosquid Says:

He’s being “moderate.” Yet, he wants all gun SELLERS, not DEALERS, to use background checks on transfers. Of course, the only way that you can ensure that private transfers use background checks is to register the guns.

  14. Mr Evilwrench Says:

And, as always, it’s compromise. Whatever we’ve developed over the years, these schmucks come along and offer to compromise between it and whatever they have in mind. Funny how that always works out stepping us in their direction, but oh, we can feel good! We can feel like adults; we can debate and compromise! Then, next year, we’ll have the opportunity again, to show how mature and grown up we are, and compromise again!

  15. Dan Says:

If he lifts the ban on selling machine guns without all that paperwork, I would consider it a good start.

  16. Mike Vanderboegh Says:

First comment, the Mike V above is not Mike Vanderboegh.

The second comment is that y’all better start panickin’ now, because the fix is in with both the NRA and the GOP:

    http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2011/03/they-really-think-they-can-get-away.html

There will be no Gunwalker hearings despite what they’ve said if it is left up to them. It is all kabuki theater.

    Sellout bastards.

  17. PawPaw Says:

Our President can start by prosecuting the ATF agents who let guns flow into Mexico. Then he can prosecute Loughner for lying on his 4473.

Or, he can just go piss up a rope.

  18. Rivrdog Says:

Then, didja all see the lame commentary by Wayne LaPierre on Fox News Good Morning Barf? They had Wayne and Paul Helmke (spit!) on, all “fair and balanced”. Wayne blew it. He tried to say that “they” should be going after the baddies and madmen, but then he offered NO way to do that, Constitutionally. Helmke (spit!), just spouted gun-grab talking points, but he WAS dressed better, for all the (no I can say that anymore!).

Why, oh why, didn’t LaPierre have a PLAN to pull out and flash for the national audience? If Wayne-buddy is all OK with whatever the dot.gov comes up with to label people “baddies or madmen”, thereby denying them their Second Amendment rights with the flourish of a pen designed and inked to write lies, then Wayne-buddy is doing us no favors.

Stiffen those spines, people! You are NOT crazy unless a DOCTOR of MEDICINE certifies to a JUDGE that you are crazy. We let go of that protection at our peril, and if we do let it go (and the NRA showed us how to let it go after Virginia Tech), we are never getting our gun rights back without armed revolution.

Uncle Joe Stalin gave us this example back 70 years ago: the easiest way to control your enemies is to certify them all insane, drug them and send them off to institutions. Do we follow Stalin’s act?

  19. Someone else Says:

“We lose the same number of young people to guns every day and a half as we did at Columbine, and every four days as we did at Virginia Tech.”

Maybe I’m not so good at my maths, but isn’t this backwards?

  20. RJG Says:

I can understand why people would want mental health records included. I am worried that people who need help won’t get help as they will be worried about giving up their rights. Check out a copy of the DSM psych manual, you can likely find a diagnosis for every person in your life.

Heck, on the paperwork for my new general family doctor they asked if I owned a gun. That’s not my doctors business.

  21. Lyle Says:

It’s called “losing the radical pose for the radical ends.” A tried and true tactic. Don’t trust these people any farther than you can throw them. I don’t care how carefully they craft their words.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
