It’s like a lawyer that goes to court and offers several seemingly mutually exclusive reasons why the plaintiff is wrong.
Argument 1: Need has nothing to do with it.
Argument 2: And if need DOES matter, then here’s proof of need.
The problem here is that people are using different definitions of need.
For socialists, “Need” is the excuse for socialism. If something is needed then it must be provided by the state. If it is not needed then the state does not provide it and it must be banned because resources used to make it are being wasted. Anyone who says, “no one needs X” is self identifying as a socialist.
In a free market, the existence of 30 round magazines proves that they are needed because people don’t bother to create things that someone doesn’t need.

Moat of what we have in the modern world we do not need, beyond a warm dry place to sleep, 2000 calories of food or so a day, and some fabric to keep warm in cold weather while outside. Everything else is a convenience.
So need has nothing to do with almost anything regarding a material possession. Nobody else in the whole wide world gets to define my desired possessions by need, especially if they are the ones determining if my need is significant enough to allow me to possess something, because they aren’t the ones with authority to allow me anything.
