Wrong side of history
I’ve often said that some folks these days are on the wrong side of history. They will, in a few decades, be viewed like the anti-civil rights crowd of the 60s is viewed today. I’ve said this about anti-gunners, those who oppose gay marriage, and those who oppose gays in the military. It’s a function of demographics and how popular opinion is trending. I watched the Daily Show yesterday, and they said something similar.

The wrong side of history is written by the winners.
For instance just about everything the social conservatives said about the sexual revolution has come true. Divorce, illegitimacy, STDs, decline of marriage. All there. All laid out in the sixties in documents like Humanae Vitae. But yet the social conservatives are still considered to be on the wrong side of history…

So, are you saying that history is just a popularity contest… The direction we decide to take our country/humanity should never be based entirely on populist opinion

It’s true, to a point: Polls show overwhelming majorities of Americans now support the RKBA. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
It’s not quite so clear when it comes to gay marriage.
And a funny thing happened on the way to our new Gay States of America: As the vote on Prop 8 in California showed, most brown and black members of the Rainbow Coalition are not terribly fond of the idea of gay marriage in particular and homosexuality in general.
This normally wouldn’t be that big of an issue but since those groups are growing as a percentage of the population one can reasonably suppose that gay marriage isn’t going to be any more popular in the year 2020 than it is today.
The upper-middle-class white liberals who are so excited by the prospect of gay marriage are steadily shrinking as a percentage of the population; in about 20-30 years, their opinion on the issue will become largely irrelevant.

History is written by liberal historians. How else do you suppose the democrats hold no blame by history for their errors in the civil rights movement, yet were the most viscous opponents of it.
And when did sticking a penis anywhere besides a vagina become a civil right? Oh well.

Respecting gay Americans’ right to marry doesn’t make us the Gay States of America any more than respecting your right to speak makes us the Asshole States of America.

I’m thinking that; “seen it on the daily show” doesn’t quite bestow the legitimacy on a view that Jon Stewart and his hangers-on would like to believe.

and i still don’t give a shit about gays…..
