Burning flags

You’ve not even burned our holy book yet. But we’re going to go ahead and burn your flag and chant death to Christians:

Elsewhere, hundreds of angry Afghans burned an American flag and chanted “Death to the Christians” to protest the planned burning of Islam’s holiest text.

From this article on the FBI visiting the pastor in Florida.

  1. Shootin' Buddy Says:

I think they have a First Amendment right to build that mosque . . . oh, wait, rights for some not for others.

First Amendment=battering ram for what the Left wants.

  2. Guav Says:

Then the pastor in FL has already succeeded in his main goal.

    Religion is so fucking stupid.

  3. Shootin' Buddy Says:

Go tell the Muslims that and let us know how that comes out for you.

  4. Dan Says:

Islam has proven that terrorism does work. They know it, which is why they do it every chance they get.

Maybe Christians should take heed: rather than do stuff that does not work like protesting and voting to get what we want (prop 8) and then get denied, perhaps making a habit of murdering and blowing up people will do the trick.

  5. Spook45 Says:

I have a very simple solution. If they dont like America, they can……..STAY OVER THERE! Works for me. I reiterate, I would rather burn a MUSLIM than a book or a flag!

  6. Guav Says:

Shootin Buddy: I said religion, as in all of them.

Dan: Terrorism worked for Christians in Northern Ireland, it worked for Zionist Jews in Palestine, why wouldn’t it also work for Muslims?

  7. SPQR Says:

The FBI thinks this is their business? Twits.

  8. trackerk Says:

“Elsewhere, hundreds of angry Afghans burned an American flag and chanted “Death to the Christians” ”

Otherwise known as a regular Wednesday.

  9. Guav Says:

I was also struck by the irony in Time Magazine’s cover photo of a young Afghani woman whose nose was chopped off for adutery or something, with the headline saying WHAT HAPPENS IF WE LEAVE.

Uhm, isn’t that what happens if we stay, too? I mean, it just happened, and we are there. Clearly, our presence does not prevent them from doing all the lovely things they do.

  10. Rose Says:

So let me get this straight. That fellow Rauff can build a so-called “Islamic center” near Ground Zero and the president is OK with it and calls it “religious freedom”, but that little preacher in a swamp in Florida is told to to call of “his Koran stunt”? Doesn’t that strike you as just too odd for words?
Frankly, I am now close to the point where I think I may go out and buy a Koran and burn it myself, just to make a point that this is still a country where such a thing is legal, even if it’s stupid.
It’s just amazing how far we’ve come when we are required by presidential edict and the FBI to roll over and play dead.

  11. David Says:

The thing that gets me is: this is 1 guy and his church of about 50. There are already, and have been for quite some time, videos of people burning Qurans on YouTube. The media could have just ignored this wacko and it wouldn’t have gotten this big.

We’re seeing the same repeated images of them burning our flag over there and they’re going to be seeing the same images of one guy, or maybe 2, burning a Quran over here. Everyone knows how repetitive the news is.

To lighten the mood a bit and also to point out something: the extremist Muslims over there are so pissed off at the Christians right now that they are forgetting how much they hate the Jews. So if this is some kind of conspiracy for that peace treaty between Israel and Palestine, well, mission accomplished.

  12. Guav Says:

Rose, no presidential edict is requiring you to do anything. Go buy a koran and burn it if it makes you feel empowered—the FBI is not going to stop you. Seems like a waste of money to me though.

Does anyone find it odd that this pastor seems to think that the best way of honoring the 3,000 Americans killed by religious extremists on 9/11 is to do something religious and extreme?

  13. Guav Says:

David, what you said goes for the “mosque controversy” as well though. Media coverage has made it a much bigger issue than it ever would have been otherwise.

  14. Maxpwr Says:

My church teaches that Islam is a false religion almost every Sunday. I wonder why Muslims don’t get upset that 99% of Christian churches teach that Islam is a path to hell. They only get upset when someone physically burns their book?

  15. ericire12 Says:

Lets see… FBI is paying this guy visits, Top ranking General, Sec of State, and the President are all speaking out against this, and Eric Holder is whispering about the possibility of hate crime charges. Me thinks this guy’s free speech rights are already being violated.

Yes, that pastor in Florida is an idiot and what he is doing is insulting, but what he is doing is also free speech (Non-violent, peacefull free speech) and we should defend to the death his right to do it.

Exit Question 1: Anyone else notice that Dear Leader did not speak on the constitutionality of this like he did with the mosque?

Exit Question 2: Can someone please help me understand how a pastor of a church of 20 can endanger the lives of our soldiers by one peacefull act of protest? I just dont see it.

Exit Question 3: Isnt the media really who should be blamed for insiting terrorists here? They are the ones making this an international issue and who are the ones who have facilitated it even being known to people halfway around the world that this was gonna happen? If they would have just ignored the idiot in the first place this would not even be a big deal.

  16. David Says:

Guav, very true. Like Bloomerberg said, if this wasn’t an election year that wouldn’t even be a story. He said there’s already a mosque just 4 blocks away. And as anyone can see Park51 or whatever there calling it has been there for over a year, they’re just expanding it. It’s basically a YMCA for Muslims.

Terry Jones is giving a press conference right now.

  17. David Says:

He canceled! Now I kind of wish he did it. Is he going to return all those donations he received?

  18. Maxpwr Says:

    The terrorists win.

  19. David Says:

They’re moving the mosque away though. Both sides win!

  20. Guav Says:

ericire12: I don’t see how burning the holy book of a major religion in an effort to offend the adherents of said faith can be called “peaceful” free speech. Free speech? Yes, but it’s not peceful. This might fall under the “Yelling Fire In A Movie Theater” category—if it endangers the public or is intended to incite a potentially violent reaction, it’s not protected speech, is it.

Exit Question 1: That’s because the constitutionality of the of the mosque is not in question even one tiny bit; there’s no room for debating it.

Exit Question 2: Read the original post. That’s how, right there.

Exit Question 3: It is not the media’s job to predict what might or might not be the outcome of the news it reports, and they cannot (and should not) take that into consideration anyway, in my opinion. I really don’t think it would be beneficial to anyone if they started doing that.

I wish they would not make mountains out of molehills on many topics, but that’s the way it works, unfortunately.

  21. ericire12 Says:

I don’t see how burning the holy book of a major religion in an effort to offend the adherents of said faith can be called “peaceful” free speech. Free speech? Yes, but it’s not peceful.

Yeah, I guess drawing a cartoon of Muhammad is a violent act also……. excuse me while I roll my eyes and walk away.

  22. Guav Says:

I didn’t say it was violent, I said it wasn’t peaceful. These are two different things. You called the proposed koran burning a peaceful protest. “Peaceful” doesn’t just mean “not literally murdering anyone.”

I wouldn’t call hundreds of angry Afghans burning an American flag and chanting Death to the Christians “peaceful” either.

    Cause it ain’t.

  23. Maxpwr Says:

“…if it endangers the public or is intended to incite a potentially violent reaction, it’s not protected speech, is it.”

Christianity teaches that all other religions are false and lead their followers to hell. If some Muslims in Pakistan protest tomorrow that such preaching offends them, are we going ban the teaching of Christianity because it might endanger the public?

  24. Guav Says:

Doesn’t every religion teach that all the other religions are false? One more reason the entire concept is utterly ridiculous. Funny how the people raised in one particular religion always think theirs is the single exception.

  25. Maxpwr Says:

You didn’t answer the question. Would you shut down churches that preach other religions are false if someone threatened violence because of that preaching?

  26. Guav Says:

No, I would not outlaw every religion for saying that they are more realer than all the other ones.

  27. Guav Says:

    Intent matters.

  28. Lyle Says:

“Elsewhere, hundreds of angry Afghans burned an American flag and chanted “Death to the Christians” to protest the planned burning of Islam’s holiest text”

Thereby creating an opportunity niche for someone in the flag and bullhorn export business. Sell them cheap U.S. flags, pre-soaked with kerosene, for ten bucks a pop. Then all you need to do for advertisement is burn a Koran once in a while.

Otherwise, those nutbags have been shouting “Death to Christians” or “Death to Infidels” for what, a thousand years or more already? Who gives a flying fuck what they think?

Oh, and I might be in favor of shutting down religions that call for the death of infidels and then make it extremely clear that they intend to carry out said killing, you know, by actually doing it world-wide, and stuff. If there’s a line to be drawn, surely that one is entirely clear.

But what the hell; let’s play pat-a-cake with them for another thousand years.

  29. divemedic Says:

Realistically, what is more of a threat to our freedom:

1 Cave dwellers with Semtex jackets and bad attitudes

2 Cops and government officials who threaten people with prosecution and harass private citizens for offending those same people.

Where in the Constitution is the Federal government granted the power to stifle free speech because it might offend someone? I could point out if that those troops everyone is so worried about were at home where they belong, they wouldn’t have to worry about being in harm’s way.

  30. Justthisguy Says:

I do hope that pastor says nothing to the Feebs except his name, if even that. The way the law is, if you say even a non-material falsehood to a Fed (i.e., the Sun rises in the West) you can go away for a long time.Just like Martha Stewart, who committed no crime.

  31. HL Says:

Why are athiests like Guav so “preachie”?

Pastor Jones draws condemnation for his actions from the leadership of both Islam AND his own Nation.

The Jackasses in Turbins can burn bibles, burn flags, and behead innocents, and the leadership of one of the aforementioned remains eerily silent.

There is a double standard. We all know why. Frankly, I’d have it no other way. It makes it clear who the enemy is.

  32. bigcat Says:

I read this blog everyday but don’t post. Today is the day.
It seems every one here has a legit opinion or rebuttal on this matter, here is, I hope, my legit opinion.
Divemedic has the point everyone should be debating, our freedoms and whats happening to them. When all this is over, and it will be gone soon believe me, the fact that all these govt. people are putting pressure on this obviously attention seeking pastor will still have happened and the result of thier actions will always be here, and will it set a precedent for what could happen in the future?

COPS AND GOVT. OFFICIALS WHO THREATEN PEOPLE WITHE PROSECUTION AND HARASS PRIVATE CITIZENS FOR OFFENDING THOSE SAME PEOPLE.

No constitutional right allows the Feds to stifle free speech because it offends someone. BULLSEYE Divemedic!

  33. David Says:

This is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. Now they’re STILL going to burn it. This guy is probably pissing off the people on his side now.

  34. bigcat Says:

He’s getting the attention he seeks.
Tell him to burn them and lets move on, odds are he won’t even do it. Playing the media and the political end of well though. The IRS will probably investigate his personal finances now lol.

  35. Dan Says:

“Dan: Terrorism worked for Christians in Northern Ireland, it worked for Zionist Jews in Palestine, why wouldn’t it also work for Muslims?”

    - And yet, places like comedy central will routinely insult Christians and are not afraid of repercussions from ‘terrorist’ Christian groups.

  36. Leroy Says:

Anyone else think it a bit odd that these illiterate mobs all seem to have several American flags just laying around, convenient for burning or, well, what else do they do with America flags. If I wanted to burn an Afghan flag, I’d probably have to make it myself out of my son’s school poster paper and Scotch tape it to a stick.

  37. Robert Says:

    Afganistan has a flag?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
