So if the South Koreans can’t sell them back to us because we gave them to them for free, and they are a Capitalist nation, I wonder what lucky country will get hold of them. “The bidding will now open…” Be nice if they would send us some of the money they’ll be making off our Free Gifts to them back here, though.

So if these were lend-lease and not outright sale to Korea to do with what they want, why the news story a few days ago that the Obama Regime was worried they’d end up with gangs, etc.
“The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions,” the official told The Korea Times.
Just come out and say they can’t be re-imported for commercial sale due to existing law.

Kirk – If the Regime won’t allow them to be re-imported, they won’t be re-imported for commercial sale. What don’t you understand?

They can’t be sold to a third party, unless ROK wants to turn the proceeds from the sale over to us. We own the guns, they don’t. Selling them and pocketing the money is theft (something all governments are intimately familiar with, but they tend to get upset when they’re the ones being robbed). Besides, the world commercial market for Garands and carbines outside the US is practically nil.

ROK has the option of returning them; normally when that happens the arms are handed to the DOD. When DOD gets weapons back, they usually hand them over to CMP if they’re not forbidden from doing so (machineguns, handguns, etc.).

Diomed – If the Regime won’t allow them to be re-imported for commercial sale, why would they allow the CMP to import them and distribute them for commercial sale?

The CMP imports nothing but ammo. All the firearms they get are given to them by the military. If the ROK decides to return the guns they got from us (and remember, their options are keep them, destroy them, or give them back), the ball will be in the court of the folks at DOD as far as what happens to them. They could send them to Cap’n Crunch, or they could send them to CMP. (Both, as I recall, are in Anniston.)
The answer then becomes lobby Congress, just as happened with the milsurp brass destruction controversy of last year.
