Couple of bleg updates

Thanks all for the various responses and emails to my camera bleg. We decided on the Nikon D5000 and we snagged a zoom lense to go with it. I’m not much of a photographer but it works quite well for the 15 minutes I managed to play with it. It snaps pictures really quick, which is what I wanted. So far, so good.

And, regarding my multi-tool bleg, I snagged another Skeletool. I like them a lot because, unlike other multi-tools I’d keep in the car, it’s light enough to carry in a pocket. This time, though, I got the one with partially serrated blade. Seems more practical.

That serrated blade may be more practical, but is it tactical?

I tried carrying my Leatherman Wave around one day just in my pocket – and thought it was gonna pull my pants down and put a hole in the pocket. No wonder they come with a belt-holster.

I’ve had a fair number of multi-tool suggestions too. Leatherman might be a bunch of dirty hippies, but they make the best multi-tools out there. SOG is the runner up as best I can tell, but what I gain is spring assist blades, which I like, but I lose a bunch of functionality I have with my previous Charge.

Ultimately I can only really muster a boycott if you make a product that I really don’t need. That’s not the case with Leatherman. I’m on week 3 without it and it’s like a part of me is missing.

Leatherman does make an AR-specific multitool so has succumbed to the historically-inevitable gun-dialectic, but it costs too much for me.

They’re the one company I’ll accept dirty hippies at. They’re warranty is good too, had one of our pilots break the pliers of my skeletool, wrote them a quick note about what happened, sent it in, got a new one about a month (including shipping time from Iraq and back) later. Carry the new skeletool clipped between my belt and pants everyday.

Never owned a multitool. I carry a knife in my pocket, and a ChannelLock pliers, pipewrench, and twelve-piece screwdriver/socket wrench kit in the trunk of my car.

I’ve come to the conclusion that partially serrated blades are almost worthless, although the German Army version with the serrations at the front makes more sense than the “normal” style. Frankly, I think it really comes down to it being a “style” thing, rather than practical. In fact, that’s how airport security viewed it prior to 9/11. The partial style was considered visually intimidating, and banned from carry-on.
Frankly, it was funny, but stupid. I showed the screener my Gerber multitool with two blades, one full serrated, one straight. No problem to take on. My half and half Benchmade? No way.

Consider, what is the primary purpose for a serrated blade? A steak knife. So the cutting edge stays sharp, it has a bunch of points to drag on the ceramic type plate to keep the working edge from touching and going dull. How well do they cut? Not well, about the same as using a wood saw to shred your meat. The points are dull, and they are what touches first. You end up sawing your way through the meat, trying to force the blade into the meat, so the hollows that are still sharp can do the cutting.

Good luck trying to resharpen those serrations without special tools.

Chainsaw file. But I don’t like seerated blades either.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
