Objects in mirror are losing

Still digging the tactical car. It’s fun to drive and the Mrs. steals it whenever she can. I’ve discovered it will outrun all manner of Charger, Challenger, Mustang, Beemer and Audi. But a Subaru WRX STI will smoke it*. Really? A Subaru. Who’d have thought?

A few issues, though. The trunk/rear window design of the Infiniti G37 has a little flaw. If it rains and you open the trunk, the rain droplets from the window will go right in the trunk. And I didn’t realize that the windows in the back weren’t tinted until the kids complained that it was bright and they couldn’t see their DS game. I took it to Pro Mark Window Tinting. For $160, he put on a most excellent window tint that was the legal limit. The legal limit, I suppose, is different for front windows than rear because my truck’s rear windows and the wife’s SUV’s rear windows were tinted from the factory and they look a bit darker. I’m happy with it and probably would never have noticed had I not had it done and it came factory. Looks factory and the service was excellent. Dropped it off one morning and had it two hours later. Highly recommended.

I’d mentioned it it needed a rail because it lacks storage. Well, Les tells me the new Mini’s actually do come with rails.

* ETA: Only from about 0-60. After that, it’s probably all G.

The WRX STI is a fast car, there’s a reason it’s the car of choice for the Red Bull Rally Team.

  2. Bobby Says:

And every serious rally driver there is that doesnt run an Evo or Focus(WRC).

My wife likes to steal the GTI when she can. It’s not up to the Tacticar, by any stretch of the imagination (it’ll beat a standard, non-STI WRX model), but it *is* zippy.

Had a buddy with the STI and it was all sorts of hopped up. Crazy fast car. Got 12mpg being towed, so that’s why I went with the GTI (I get 30 MPG if I drive nice, 27 if I floor it a lot).

  4. SayUncle Says:

    I can get 29mpg. I just haven’t yet 🙂

  5. SayUncle Says:

Oh, and the subaru will get me in 0-60 but the quarter mile, probably not.

  6. Jim W Says:

STIs have never been that fast, except from a stop, and then only if they launch the car hard. If an STI doesn’t have a RWD car convincingly beat by around 50-60 mph (ie, a car length or two behind), they’re probably going to lose by 80mph.

Again, we are going to have to have ourselves a little drag-race – unfortunately, these days, the name “Mustang” means little without specifics behind it ;).

Do you know what brand tint he threw on your windows? I am going with a competitor, just because I had experience with Llumar on my last car.

  8. SayUncle Says:

true. I doubt it’d hang with a shelby or something like that but the regular v8 maybe. Looks like the GT would get it at 0-60 but not 1/4mile.

I do not know the brand but you could probably call and ask: (865) 368-5343‎

Die hard subaru fan here. That STi will smoke most anything on pavement…….and dirt, and snow, etc… Can’t say that about a lot of cars.

  10. Steven Says:

Not a rally car fan, I like RWD Japanese cars (had an RX-8, now an S2000)…but STIs are insane. Good friend has an STI with 350hp and 350ft-lbs of torque. I hold no delusions on who would win any kind of contest – takeoff, top speed, handling. It’s modified a good bit, so I don’t know stock STI vs G37 top speed…but watch out for them.

  11. Robert Says:

STI’s aren’t made for top speed. They’re made for tight twisty roads where you probably would not even get farther than 3rd gear. I had one ( before I got the house and the new young’un).

I’d be remiss if I didn’t sing the praises of my Maserati. It’s a 2 seat spyder gran turing monster. O to 60 in 4.5 sec. I’ve not had it to top speed but it’s over 175. The exhaust sound is superb (actually been a study on the relation between the Maserati engine sound and how sexually excited the ladies got.) This car was made for the roads around here in the E. TN mountains where it sticks like glue but when you take it on a trip and turn off the suspension sport mode it lives up to it’s GT name.

I have a modern sport bike and before that a dirt stock car, I don’t care how fast my car is anymore. The RC51 has 128 hp at the rear wheel of a bike that weighs with the mods I’ve done a hair under 500 lbs. 0-60 happens in under 3 seconds and top speed is somewhere around 158mph (unless you are being clocked by the MN state patrol then 205 is possible). My only problem is it eats tires at a prodigious rate and only seats me.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
