Things I didn’t know happened

Apparently, bears get caught up in combines more often than I thought. Which would have been never.

So, Global Warming will solve our energy crisis?

Climategate.com:

The climate models that predict catastrophic global warming also result in a net heat flow from atmospheric greenhouse gasses to the warmer ground, which is in violation of the second law of thermodynamics.

Essentially, any machine which transfers heat from a low temperature reservoir to a high temperature reservoir without external work applied cannot exist. If it did it would be a “perpetual motion machine” – the realm of pure sci-fi.

A victory

Good:

Police need reasons to believe a suspect is dangerous before firing a Taser and can’t use their stun gun simply because the person is disobeying orders or acting erratically, a federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled Monday.

The decision by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sets judicial standards for police and for people who claim they were victims of excessive force after police hit them with a Taser dart.

The Jihad Made Me Do It

Looks like a Muslim cleric has ties to the Fort Hood Shooter and the Christmas bomber. And even the perpetrators of 9/11.

But Ft. Hood was not terrorism.

Mayors Against Guns Plans

Alan:

This is not about enforcing existing laws. This is about creating new ones, and banning guns.

No wonder Bloomberg didn’t want it made public.

Presidentin’ is hard

Poor Obama. He’s tired after a year. And he’s had like, what, four vacations? I don’t know the answer but it seems like he’s had a few. Compared to Bush, who I think CNN actually had a vacation day counter on their page. I kid. But the press did make fun of Bush’s numerous vacations. Barry, not so much. See, hopey changey requires you to be well rested. I mean, it ain’t easy closing gitmo; winning and withdrawing from Iraq; winning and withdrawing from Afghanistan; dealing swiftly with attempted terror attacks; shining a light on lobbying; reading bills; cutting taxes for working families; cutting pork barrel spending; being fiscally responsible; parting the red sea; cutting the deficit; securing the borders; fixing the economy; getting people jobs; helping those folks in Honduras and Iran with their oppressive governments; and giving everyone a magical, rainbow-farting unicorn. Oh, that’s right, he hasn’t done any of that. Doing nothing makes me tired too.

But his friend’s kid gets a boo-boo and the presidential motorcade springs into action.

Mayors Against Guns Sooper Seekrit Plan

It’s not a secret anymore. Seems some pro-rights activists got a hold of it. Quite a wish list they have there, including such gems as RealID for gun purchases and enhanced record keeping by FFLs.

In the past, gun control group like the Brady Campaign and the Violence Policy Center have been, frankly, jokes. Oh, sure, the Bradys got a couple of bills passed when one president decided to take on the gun lobby. And that didn’t work out. But mostly, both groups have been utterly ineffective. But Bloomberg’s group has money, time, and the city of New York’s money to throw at your rights.

As can be seen in that document, the folks at MAIG actually know gun laws and how ATF works. They’re not stupid and it’s clear they’ve done their homework.

You need to go read that to see what we’re up against.

Guns and geekery

A video of a ‘real’ M41A Pulse Rifle from Alien: Composed of a SWD M-11/9 submachine gun and a Remington 870 short barreled shotgun, it holds 50 9mm rounds via a Sumoi “Coffin” magazine and three 12 gauge, 2-3/4″ shells. That’s two in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Unpossible

In Brooklyn, a man with a bulletproof vest tries to shoot some police officers. His gun jammed, which seems to be a theme in NY lately. And: The cops struggled with Rivera for control of the weapon while, according to authorities, Rivera’s mother, Rosa, 43, yelled: “Shoot the cop! Shoot the cop!” Sad.

And in SanFran, a man and 2 girls were shot at a restaurant.

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago said on Sunday her husband has given her a submachine gun to protect herself from those threatening to kill her.

But she said she had to go back to practice shooting because she was not familiar with the handgun given to her.

Dave Barry:

As a result Washington, rejecting “business as usual,” finally stopped trying to solve every problem by throwing billions of taxpayer dollars at it and instead started trying to solve every problem by throwing trillions of taxpayer dollars at it.

Pistol Permits in NYC

Issued to Bernie Madoff’s son, despite allegations he allegedly punched out a former employee. Even has a list of other famous people with permits.

Update: A fail to mention error (see #21). Seems my absence of condemnation of the NY press publishing a list indicates that I’m OK with it. I’m not, really. Privacy is privacy. But I think GunGeek made a good point a bit back:

If you live in a “may issue” state, there MUST be some way for those have been denied a permit to see who did get approved. Without at least that minimum level of accountability, the potential for abuse is just too great.

And NYC is may-issue for mere ownership.

So, that one’s a thinker.
