Not only do I play an Uncle on the internet, I’m one in real life too

A day with the nephews, who are 9. They came up yesterday and we did a little shooting, fixed a door, and played Mario Kart on the Wii. We got hungry and went for pizza. Get in my truck and Renegade by Hed (PE) was playing. Knowing that the lyrics were probably inappropriate for young ears, I turned the stereo to radio and Nickelback’s Rockstar was playing. The kids knew and sang every word. I was a bit ill at ease over them knowing lyrics about drug dealers on speed dial and whoring around. I don’t know that it was better than the occasional ‘nigga’ or f-bomb.

  1. Ray Walters Says:

There is nothing safe about Nickelback.

  2. Dan Says:

I cannot understand how nickelback is popular.

  3. Reed Says:

You listen to rap metal? I am genuinely disappointed.

  4. SayUncle Says:

I listen to just about everything but new country. Hed PE does a lot more than rap metal, though.

  5. RML Says:

I’m proud to say that I saved Son of RML from rap by turning him into a metalhead. He hates pop music also and questions the tastes of his fellow 7th graders.

  6. JJR Says:

Did you tell them the song is a satirical riff on everyone’s idealization of what it’s like to be a “Rock Star”?, i.e. it’s a joke, not to be taken seriously.

Well, that and the band itself is a joke, since all of their songs sound pretty much the same with little variation.

Here’s a better version for Rock Star

    Outstanding!

  8. Caleb Says:

I’d be more worried that they know the words to a Nickleback song, regardless of which shitty Nicleback song it is.

  9. M4Finny Says:

It may be a “joke” to adults. But, nothing funny about young people at the age of nine being exposed to that garbage. Gun range=good, Mario Kart=good, fixing stuff with an Uncle that loves you=great, being exposed to noise like that? …. if they knew the lyrics already, sounds like the parents are at fault. Turn on some classical or better yet, just turn the damned thing off and talk about your day together. Why do we all think that we need “background noise” to complete our lives?

  10. Les Jones Says:

It’s hard not to think “Rockstar” is a really lousy song if you’re an intelligent grownup.

‘Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars
Live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
We’ll all stay skinny cause we just won’t eat
And we’ll hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
    Every good gold digger’s
    Gonna wind up there
    Every Playboy bunny
    with her bleach blonde hair
And we’ll hide out in the private rooms
    With the latest dictionary
    in today’s who’s who
    We’ll get you anything
    with that evil smile
    Everybody’s got a
    drug dealer on speed dial
    well..
Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar

Hed PE reminds me a bit of Linkin Park, except more raw.

  12. tim buckner Says:

Sounds like you and the young’uns had a good day.I can’t believe some of the asshat comments you got about a song y’all listened to.

  13. Tomcatshanger Says:

I can’t believe folks think songs about sex, drugs, and, well, rock and roll are a new thing.

    Good gods guys, chill out.

  14. harleycowboy Says:

If you don’t want your children to hear that stuff change to country music.

  15. SayUncle Says:

If you don’t want your children to hear that stuff change to country music.

    That’s funny right there.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
