Guns in Pop Culture

Thirdpower:

In a post last week, I’ld mentioned that I’ve seen a significant uptick in ‘Rightwing Extremist Militia’ type stories on TV shows and 9badly) made for TV movies. Kaveman then crawled out from under the trailer w/ a copy of the Jan. ’04 edition of America’s 1st Freedom that had an article, Advise and Decieve, about the Joyce Foundation funding a group whose purpose was to push for guns to be shown in a bad light in the media.

Several examples too.

Just today while channel surfing, I noticed a re-run of Law and Order where the “Sons of Liberty” militia, were as usual, the bad guys. They had guns and they quoted the Bill of Rights. Some or one of their group had robbed a bank, but that’s what “sons of liberty” who have guns do…according to the show.

I’ve noticed a number of TV dramas and movies over the years with the same theme. Constitutionalists and armed citizens are ALWAYS the bad guys, maybe except in the older westerns. Of course, the hired guns are always the good guys…except in real history.

uh, no! Not even in the old westerns. Think back and remember how many times the protagonists in those old westerns horrified or sickened at the violence threw their guns in the dirt and walked away at the end. It was a common theme, that at the end the hero would give up the tools that saved his life. More ended that way than the other.

That propaganda has been around since the ’30’s and it finally came to fruition in the ’60’s, and accelerated from there.

I was the one who silently strode up afterward, retrieved the gun from the dirt, took it home, gave it a thorough cleaning, and lived happily ever after.
Hey, it’s my fantasy, and I can do what I want 😉

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
