The bipolar thing is enough to give me pause. Add DV to that and this is someone who I wouldn't want to have carrying guns around me. I have to wonder where he bought the guns: State, etc.

B. Smith,
a revolver as backup to an auto is quite normal. Plus, it's not ammo capacity that's necessarily needed, it's a second gun because the primary broke or was lost or other reasons. Revolvers are more concealable than autos, depending where carried. Sometimes they are more comfortable in various locations. Lots of other factors that can go into the decision as to what carried where. Lots of cops carry a backup gun (BUG), some are issued and required.

Admittedly, that's a lot of shotgun ammo, especially for a pistol grip! Then again, I've never heard of someone complaining about having TOO MUCH ammo in the middle of a firefight.

Reckless driver on a giant motorized tricycle with a guitar case strapped to his back? Totally inconspicuous. Must be racial profiling.

On the Capital Beltway, by a guy diagnosed as bipolar, whose wife had accused him of domestic violence, yes...three is a lot.
Of course, there were apparently no actual charges stemming from the DV accusation, so it may just be a all-too-typical revenge tactic from a pissed-off spouse. I don't know if bipolar disorder constitutes a 'mentally unfit' status toward owning guns, nor the extent of West's condition and what treatment he might be receiving--- so that might be media hype too.
But riding the Beltway on a trike strapped with two loaded pistols and carrying a shotgun with a butt-load of shells has gotta raise some red flags. If, as his father claimed, he needed them for 'protection', it would seem he'd be better off choosing a bit more low-key, safer mode of transportation. Also, the combination of two different-caliber weapons for defensive carry seems a bit odd...why not carry the Beretta with as many spare mags as you thought you might need?
You can't say right or wrong until you know ALL the facts, of course, but it sure smells fishy so far.
