Guns on Campus

At Michigan State:

The old rule at Michigan State University completely banned guns from campus. The new rule allows permit holders to carry concealed weapons — although there is a catch.

Would be better if they just treated campus the same way they treat the sidewalk outside of campus and the surrounding town.

Still this gets rid of a few nasty problems. I know last month I took my folks out to dinner in Cambridge Mass. There was a shortcut between the parking lot and the restaurant through Harvard yard. I couldn’t take it. Back before I carried I lived by a college campus, nice place to go for a walk or a bike ride. Also a place where assault and robbery are not uncommon things.

Would be nice if the Marine attending class on the GI Bill didn’t have to lock his heater in the car (where it could be stolen) or leave it home (which disarms him off campus too), but at least this is a little better.

Also when nobody gets killed for the next few years will do out side some good. That and the fact that there STILL hasn’t been any campus shootings in Utah…

The new law makes MSU in line with the rest of the state. They have a constitutional exception which made them think they were not subject to state gun laws. They’re not. Some lawyer did his homework. I wrote a whole paper on this once upon a time. Here’s the new ordinance:

“.01 Except as permitted by state law regulating firearms, no person shall possess any firearm or weapon anywhere upon property governed by the Board. Persons residing on property governed by the Board shall store any and all firearms and weapons with the Department of Police and Public Safety.”

Which means if you have a CPL, no guns in dorms or classrooms. Open carry is legal, but I’m not up to speed on the restrictions on that without a CPL.

Next, we have to take on U of M and Wayne State Univ. They both are covered under the same constitutional exemptions as MSU. U of M even tries to say CPLs are not valid on their campuses. It won’t hold up in court, but I sure don’t want to be the test case.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
