Ok, but Elmer Keith, the creator of the .44 Magnum, wrote about somebody he knew who fired a .38-40 out of a .45 because that’s the only cartridge and only gun he had.

It’s amazing how little the 9mm gains from a long barrel. That’s a testament to how well-optimized it is for pistol-length barrels.

I had seen that some time back but reviewing it again has convinced me that I need a 10″ Ruger SBH I saw at a local shop the other day. An excellent reason to have a new tool in the safe.
Now to go looking for a durable scope for it.

It works far better in rifle-length barrels. If Kel-Tec ever produces the Target version of their RFB (Rifle, Front ejection, Bullpup), they are going to put a 32″ barrel on it. The 308 Winchester, when shot out of a barrel that long, with appropriate twist and slow powders, can attain velocities similar to a .300 WIN Mag with heavier bullets of good coefficient shot out of a traditional 24″ rifle barrel.
In a 16.1″ barreled Kel-Tec SUB 2000 in 9mm, you do only get 200 fps more velocity from Cor-Bon’s hot bonded bullet than you do from a 4″ barreled pistol.
Shooting 240-gr .44-MAG Remington out of my Marlin 1894C carbine, I get about 350 fps more velocity than out of a 6″ revolver barrel.
It’s probably more about the burning characteristics of the powder than anything else. The bigger cartridges offer the possibility to use larger amounts of slower-burning powder, so there is more difference with a longer barrel.
