The Wal-Mart in Burleson, TX (south of Fort Worth) sells firearms, but there's also a really nice Academy Sports there too as well as a couple of specialty gun stores, not to mention CTD and Cabela's in Fort Worth, and also Military Gun Supply (mostly surplus, a good supply of Mausers, Mosins, etc... they have a web store too) and Winchester Gallery (new guns, expensive old American guns, and an indoor range with a variety of handgun rentals) in FW as well. Anyway, I bought a Rem 700 in .30-06 on clearance at the Burleson W-M a year or two ago.... $325 IIRC, not a bad deal. And they still had guns the last time I was in there, although that was probably 6 months ago (travel a lot for my job). Most of the WMs in the North Texas region don't carry guns, but they do have some accessories and a decent selection of ammo.

In the Austin area, most stores no longer sell firearms, but most still stock ammo. One of my best purchases ever was a marked down Savage single shot 22LR youth model for $65. I've had more fun with that gun and my kids over the years than any other make, model, caliber, or color of firearm. And it is a real tackdriver.

JJR, if you come that far, check out Cheaper Than Dirt's store. They are only about 15 past Cabelas. Where is this WalMart that still sells guns at?

The one in my old hometown pulled all but airguns, but they still sell ammo (but aren't restocking it).

The one up here where I live & work now in the N. Texas region sells an assortment of long guns...mostly shotguns (pump, semiauto, and single shot) and bolt action hunting rifles, .22LR plinkers, and I do believe a few black powder weapons. They sell all kinds of ammo including handgun ammo but no handguns. The only thing I don't like is the sporting goods counter where they are located is seldom manned, and it can be a real pain in the *ss to flag an associate down willing/able to do an ammo sale.
There's a giant sporting goods store across the street that's a little better, customer service-wise, and *almost* worth their mark-up.

The nearest place you can get handguns from a box store is the next town over, about 20 miles away or so. We do have one private FFL in town who has a storefront but no showroom and deals strictly 1 customer at a time by appointment only and is hard to get a hold of. He's where I got my Springfield XD compact, for which I'm very grateful, but it's such a phone tag game to ever reach the guy I'd sooner drive all the way to the nearest Cabela's in Fort Worth for any future purchases, most likely. I'm planning on hitting the Fort Worth gun show at the end of the month, then swinging by that Cabelas on the way out of town afterwards.

Wallyworld is ok but I wish we had an Academy Sports in town (that's the nearest box store the next town over I was talking about). I was going to get my AR from them but they were chronically sold out whenever I was interested, so I finally picked up my Bushmaster AR over at Cabelas.

I bought a nice Howa .22-250 a few years ago at Wal-Mart.
If they have a gun counter ask to see their special order catalog!

I just bought a 10/22 from the local walmart. Since they put the firearms in the back of the store farthest from the doors the perp walk was quite a trip.

If it's a local demographic thing, then we have a decent group of shooters in town. The local walmart carries most of the "bread and butter" guns: Rem 870's, Ruger and Marlin 22's and a few blackpowder guns among others. They also carry LOTS of shooting accessories: All sorts of brand name cleaning products, Boresnakes in assorted calibers, Nikon and BSA scopes, bipods, etc.

Seems to be something controlled by the regional guys. We have several Wal Marts in the metro and some have gun counters and some don't. Seems to be controlled by the demographic they are looking for.

The one near my house (suburban area) used to sell firearms but stopped when Wal-Mart recently pulled guns from a large number of stores. I wasn't surprised by that, but I was surprised to see that a store near my in-laws, in a much more rural area loaded with hunters, also pulled them at the same time. That one still sells ammo, though.

I was honestly surprised that the one down the road from me has a shotgun, black powder, and bolt-action collection that rivaled most gun stores I have been in. Of course, this is after a year of living in San Diego, where no SuperWalmarts are allowed, and you can bet your bottom dollar you cannot even get ammunition there.
