Lyle is the type of Libertarian I'm thinking of when I (often) say:

Libertarians are just anarchists who lack the stones to admit it.

Great idea, Lyle.

Next they can auction off the public road in front of my house. I'll have to pay a toll to back out of my own driveway, but at least the street will be paved with shiny faux gold bricks, a real improvement over that asphalt stuff.

"The idea itself is older than the republic."

So is slavery, military conquest, and monarchy, to name just a few.

Your point is classic; "I like the idea of a public this or a public that, it's just that they're never handled properly..."

Exactly, which is where another classic saying came from; "The only problem with socialism is that the right people had never been in charge."

I don't have a problem with farms; I just don't want them run by government.

I don't have a problem with manufacturing; I just don't want it run by government.

I don't have a problem with modern medicine; I just don't want it run by government.

I don't have a problem with education....

I don't have a problem with living in a house...

Banking...

Transportation...

Energy...

Communication...

Now make up a hundred more on your own. Thay can be little things, like shoes or paper clips, even. That's your assignment for the week.

Hadn't heard that one before. I'll have to store that one away.

The Boston Commons was originally a common grazing area for the livestock of local farmers. Well before it became a drill ground. Just thought you would might appreciate that little tidbit.

I could direct plenty of grief at the NPS, like eminent domain abuse, user fees for public property, shaking down legitimate business people like guides for protection money, and anti-hunting regulations where there is a obvious need to thin out an overpopulation. However, the idea of public parks itself, I really don't have a problem with. The idea itself is older than the republic.

An example would be the Boston commons, where ordinary citizens drilled for the militia after church every Sunday. I do believe it's actually illegal to reenact this bit of history with real flintlock rifles nowadays within Boston city limits.
