I'd say, "She's a good writer" but somehow that doesn't do it justice. Good writing is a technical skill, which she has, but her writing is much more than that.

Where did you find that piece? I did tear up. It was beautifully written and showed the emotional attachment to guns our parents owned.

I was luckier, after my brothers left for college; I expressed an interest in getting a gun to learn how to shoot. He got me at age 13 an S&W model 41 22-caliber target gun. My son loves to shoot that gun now. A year later my father got for him and me two Remington 1100 shotguns for skeet. Mine was 20 gauge and his was 12 gauge. Twice a week during high school we went and shot skeet winter, spring, summer and fall. I reloaded 1000 shells twice a week. When my father went into a hobby he went whole hog.

I enjoyed many years shooting with him. He did get my older brothers shotguns too, after I got mine, and was the girl in the family. I got handguns earlier than my older brothers simply because I expressed an interest.

Now my father is gone, but I have his service Colt 1911A which my son likes to shoot beyond all the handguns.

Much the same story in our family. The Luger is a 1940 DMW police rebuild. My dad brought it home from the war. He gave it to me when I was 14.

Later when he and mom retired to Florida and he got tired of bashing snakes with a shovel, I got him a .38 to use with snake loads.

The .38 has gone to my daughter, but no matter what happens, no matter what I need to sell, the Luger stays in the family.

...and it does bite.
