SA,

I'll take a very minor victory over a major defeat any day.

This is a good day!

this is a very minor victory for us. It could be a Pyrrhic victory if we are not alert and active. This is no time to rest. The other side is already looking at the weasel words as license to infringe if only they do it more creatively than they have had to do in the past.

Which will make it even more difficult to correct if they find solace in the weasel words of this decision. Stare Decisis and Precedent, anyone?

It didn't even find mandatory licensing and registration schemes unlawful. It could have been worse, but it was a very, very tightly-written result.

Someone pinch me. So I can stop worrying about their conspiring to take over the world? I had a nightmare starring G.W. riding a shark with a laser beam on its head last night. Huge victory in my opinion, it has renewed my faith in the U.S., at least for today.... Its things like this I worry about and am damned glad I was wrong in the end!

How will the " Liberal Media " react ? Just watch the news in the future, everytime a gun is involved in something, it will be the lead story and it will be blamed on this ruling.

The opinion spends quite a bit of time distinguishing "military arms", and arms designed for use by the military. Does this forshadow a renewed effort against "Assault Weapons", and the ownership of AR-15s and other weapons? Now, many of these arguments are bordering on specious, as many common arms now recognized as clearly civilian were originally designed for military use. The 1911 anybody? What about the '98 Mauser, on which pretty much all modern bolt action rifles are based?

It will be interesting to see how this gets spun and how this all plays out in lower courts and in the media.

trainer, that language seemed to me to be the narrowing clauses i'd been expecting; Scalia making it clear he wasn't ruling on carry permits, or machineguns, or anything else, just on Heller and possession of handguns in the home. well enough, we can discuss the rest of those matters in separate cases. as i was agreeing with Uncle earlier there'll inevitably be more cases to iron out the further details anyway, and this looks to me like a list of details they're specifically leaving for such future arguments.

so far, about as good as i was ever hoping for and maybe a bit better. a good day, all in all. could've wished for a larger majority, but meh, this'll do.

I'll one-up ya:
"The Second Amendment would be nonsensical if it read, 'A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to petition for redress of grievances shall not be infringed.'”

...with some weasel words in there...

Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited.
It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any
manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed
weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment
or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast
doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by
felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms
in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or
laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of
arms.

But all in all good.

I'm interested in what the lib justices are going to say in dissent.
