Just before the Civil War, on Congressman nearly beat a Senator to death with HIS ‘walking stick’.

1856 — Congressman Preston Brooks from South Carolina attacks staunch abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner (from Massachusetts) on the floor of the Senate, beating him senseless with a gold-headed cane. The beating is so severe that Senator Sumner requires more than two years to recover. Congressman Brooks resigns but is immediately reelected by his constituents and receives dozens of canes from people all over the south to replace the one he broke over Senator Sumner’s head.

Maybe Obama could stop with the wishful thinking and get to ‘work’.

Good point about Preston Brooks. (For the benefit of those who finished high school after 1968) Brooks was a pro-slavery US Representative from South Carolina who brought a cane into the Senate chamber and severely beat Senator Charles Sumner with it. Sumner was a powerful anti-slavery advocate.

Funny, had a white politician in this election cycle made a wisecrack about thumping someone with a cane we would be hearing, seeing, and reading “racist gaffe” until our eyes and ears bled from fatigue.

I’m sure Armed Liberal and a number of others would say, “He’s just kidding.” But as I commented to AL some years ago on that sort of thought, it’s not ‘just kidding’, it’s more like wishful thinking.

Furthermore, as others here have commented, he sounds more like Hugo Chavez ever more frequently these days. And Hugo HAS been ‘whupping up’ on HIS ‘legislative’ branch.

When we got Deval Patrick here (who essentially ran the same campaign and platform as Obama is now) I thought we were DOOMED to crazy liberal laws from the guy. But he’s so incompetent he’s gotten NOTHING done, besides a bill giving a tax break to Mass Biotech companies (savor the irony of an uber-liberal giving tax cut to the Evil Big-Pharma).

If I thought there was a good chance that Barry would just cock-up everything and give us 4 years of gridlock I’d vote for him over McCain in a heartbeat.

Of course the risk of that is altogether too high for my likes.
