Romney on guns

Glenn and Helen have a podcast with him: he says he’ll veto any gun control bills that cross his desk as President, including a renewal of the “assault weapon” ban.

That is, as Glenn notes, more than Bush ever promised.

    i was supporting Fred!. 🙁
Given what choices I have left, I saw this:
    http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/01/your-handy-candidate-comparison-chart.html

My perspective is that he will say whatever he has to in order to get elected. As will the others. But at least this guy is saying some things I agree with…

  2. thirdpower Says:

He’s saying them now. What about two years from now when he needs to suck up to the Dem. vote in Congress? Will he still proclaim his newly acquired NRA membership then?

  3. Sebastian Says:

Didn’t he just say he supported an assault weapons ban a few weeks ago? The problem with Romney is his position will be whatever adviser or interest group is talking to him at that point.

  4. Linoge Says:

Well, considering that he said the exact opposite in the past ( http://www.ontheissues.org/Governor/Mitt_Romney_Gun_Control.htm ), I know exactly what he will do in the future, when the chips are on the table.

Do whatever gets him the most power, or, barring that, the most popularity. And considering how small of a population segment we People of the Gun are…

  5. LibertyPlease Says:

I’m not sure what the purpose of posting this was, as Romney has proven he will say anything, and his actions have been consistently pro-state/anti-rights concerning firearms.

Giving this authoritarian windbag any press for known lies is questionable….

  6. SayUncle Says:

the purpose is that it has to do with guns and politics. and this blog focuses on, err, guns and politics. i didn’t say i believed him.

Owned by a little old lady that only drove it to church on Sunday.

I listen to Romney and I hear used car salesman.

  8. _Jon Says:

I agree with what most of you are saying.
But my point is, the other folks aren’t even trying to patronize us – they are all openly saying f-you to peeps like us. At least this guy is offering a reach-around.

  9. mike123 Says:

He is now the only candidate that is embracing gun rights. Some might say its an election day conversion. Fine with me. His views on gun rights are moving in our direction and that is good. He is certainly no worse than Hillary, Obama, or McCain. He is better than those three because he wants our vote.

I’m a Fred Head and I’m proudly voting for Romney.

  10. Jim W Says:

I’ll take these promises from romney over what the other candidates are offering.

  11. Adam Lawson Says:

Romney is no more the say anything candidate than McCain, who has reversed his positions on taxes, immigration, and judges.

But the way I see it: Romney has a history of saying things that imply he’d violate rights, while McCain has a history of actually going after them (McCain-Feingold).

  12. Cactus Jack Says:

I dont believe anything Romney says this week because next week he’ll have a different stance on the same issue. He’s more deserving of the nickname “flipper” than Hanoi Kerry.

  14. Rabbit Says:

Maybe so, but at least the flip is toward the direction we’d want.

He’s convinced me to not write in Fred Dalton Thompson on my Texas Primary ballot… begrudgingly.

    Rabbit.

  15. Jim W Says:

Romney’s talk on the economy really cheers me up. He gets it in a way that McCain definitely does not. That makes him a solid second choice to Ron Paul IMO.

  16. Steve Ramsey Says:

McCain’s record isn’t perfect. But it IS a record. All Romney has are words, words that often contradict his previous words.

  17. Fiftycal Says:

Hillary or Obama? I know both of the candidates on the R side are lying scumbags. Which D would screw the country up less in the upcoming 4 years? The main problem I see is that you’ll have a D deciding who gets on the Supreme Court. At least 2 replacements are coming up in the next 4 years. Of course the ones that are leaving are liberals anyway, so maybe that won’t be a net change.

Yeah, THIS week. The only thing Romney’s consistant on is his inconsistantcy.

  19. Helvetix Says:

So this guy was voted in by the exact same electorate that brought us John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and Mass. in general. Somehow I’m supposed to believe that Romney is fundamentally different than any of them?

  20. johnx Says:

How do most Mormons in Utah feel about gun control? I don’t know the answe to that question, but I am sure that Romney would not turn his back on those people. What is the general position of the Mormon church on gun control? That’s the question that you should ask.

  21. ben Says:

Wow, at least now there’s some hope. Before this, it was looking pretty bleak for us gun-nuts. Romney will get my vote if he doesn’t flip back. Woe to him should he flip on this while in office. I will personally campaign for Obama in 2012 should that happen.

  22. Stan Says:

There is no official church position, but people are allowed to carry inside the churches.

Most Mormons are conservative, so most are pro-2A. Also note, quite a few are ignorant, so when you say “assault weapon” they think of evil death rays, that when fired indiscriminately into the air always blow up the nearest PD or elementary school, whichever is closer.

I emailed Romney right before and after the FL debate on this subject. I got a reply but accidentally deleted it before I could read it as it was in my Spam folder. I wish I could take credit for his sudden change of heart.

I’d like to think he won’t turn his back on Utahns and Mormons, and now that he’s on record, it’ll be much harder for him to relent. But I still don’t know if I can trust him.

  23. Stan Says:

So this guy was voted in by the exact same electorate that brought us John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and Mass. in general…

    Um, epistemological fallacy.

  24. Brad Says:

Well, Romney is certainly demonstating a remarkable – flexibility. I think there isn’t much question that Romney is pandering to pro-gun Republicans, but at least he feels we are worth pandering to!

The sad truth is there are no longer any good choices left among the candidates so it comes down to a choice of the lesser of evils, and in my opinion Romney is the lesser evil. Romney may be a RINO who is doing a slick-willie to win, but that is still better than McCain who has been leading attacks on the 1st Amendment and the 2nd Amendment.

  25. Hemlock Says:

McCain-Feingold stinks to high heaven, but McCain has not signed a never sunsetting assault weapon ban like Romney did in Mass. (and said he liked it!) . With Fred out this is a two issue election for me now. Gun rights and supreme court judges. Thanks to the MSM, we really have some great choices.

  26. bob r Says:

NOT true. The Mormon church has registered with the state their intention that firearms are prohibited in ‘All “houses of worship” in Utah’.

Note also that the Mormon church is the only church in Utah to register a prohibition with the state.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
