I'm sorry to everyone here, but what he did was not vandalism. It was sabotage. There is a distinct and important difference.

There's a reason most of those camera housings are bullet-proof. The fiery tire seems to have been pretty effective. I saw an entire website dedicated to GATSO fire photos.

If I were this guy, I'd ask for a jury trial. I know if I sat on the jury I'd stand up and applaud the guy.

Back in 1971 or 1972 there was a stretch of highway in Texas called Spur 303 that had window-level pole-mounted speed cameras. These cameras would photograph your front license plate and stamp your measured speed on a picture for a citation and fine by mail.

(These were not impervious to buckshot and replacement costs were high.)

An acquaintance (allegedly) employed another, less destructive approach ... since motorcycles had no front license plate, he would don a full-coverage, dark visored helmet and roar down the road at maybe twice the speed limit. Noting the 'flashes of the cameras' as he passed.

Again, and again, and again ... Until the flashes stopped, indicating that the film was expended.

The cameras have been removed for more than thirty years since.

Each of those GATSOs has a rather spendy Digital SLR camera in it.

Think "ebay".

I get pissed off when I see road signs with bullet holes in them for the same reasons; it’s vandalisim and it makes gun owners look bad.

Er, there’s a big difference between road signs, and cameras. I’ve never vandalized a road sign, but would love to remove the cameras. Since those who seek to monitor us are not easily dissuaded, guns are one option.

Yes there is a difference between road signs and cameras but vandalism is vandalism no matter what's being vandalized.

I hate it when people do this. It is vandalism. It makes gun owners look bad. Just vote against them in the next election.

I question his methodology also. They've become experts at this sort of thing in Britain, where the preferred method is to pour some gasoline in the well of a tire, hook it over the camera, and set the whole thing on fire. Much quieter and works on pretty much all models.
