At the gun show

Went yesterday and bought myself a birthday present (I’m 36 today). I walked by a counter and saw a pretty snazzy Ruger 10/22. I thought wow, that looks cool. Then I realized that it had a Tapco stock on it, which can be hit or miss. Then I handled the weapon and it felt quite nice in my hand. It was a nice, tight fit with the 10/22 action and barrel and it offered a rail. Plus, I just like things that look AR-15ish. So, I bought one of these stocks for Mr. Plinky. I got it in Dark Earth color. It even has a single point sling mount so I get to make another Uncle Brandtm Single Point Sling.

Now, I need an optic. I feel bad putting a $400 dollar optic on a less than $150 weapon. Any suggestions for a decent and cheap red dot sight?

    Whippersnapper.

For just playing with a 10/22? Just get a little 30mm BSA dot and call it good. Wally World has ’em.

I hear the BSA’s don’t work so well outdoors (i.e., not bright enough). Anyone know?

  4. trainer Says:

I’ve got one in a scout position on my SKS…not bright enough for sunlight at the range…way to slow to pick up the sights. Other than that, it’s got a nice sharp dot and the batteries have lasted 4 years.

Not my birthday, but I got myself a SMLE III over the weekend. NICS was down, naturally, so I couldn’t take it home.

It’s getting to the point in the election cycle that I need to start buying guns.

    Very nice, amigo.

I left a little money at the show on Saturday, picking up a S & W Model 27 and a Colt Trooper.

    Happy Birthday!

I used to have a BSA on my 10/22 – worked fine for shooting Squeeks and such but I eventually replaced it with something a little better.

  10. Tam Says:

Well, last BSA I played around with outdoors was atop Marko’s Benelli Nova, but the backyard range is semi-shaded.

Thing it, be it BSA, Bushnell, Trashco, or Tru-Glo, odds are good that your cheap red dot is coming out of People’s Army Optics Factory #109 and differs only in its markings.

Maybe try picking a used lower-end Aimpoint up on fleabay?

  11. Tam Says:

Er, “thing is“, not “thing it“.

  12. Manish Says:

Happy Birthday! As it happens my birthday was last week (yup on 10/22) 🙂

I’ve got a BSA 30mm on top of my Berreta NEO and it’s fine even in the bright sunlight of Moab, UT. Linoge from over at Walls of the City just picked up one of these and got a great deal on it.

Happy Birthday to a gentleman and a patriot. Many happy returns!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

millet makes a good dot sight. Better than BSA anyway, and it’s a 3 MOA dot instead of 5 MOA.

Happy birthday, you have a year on me!

  17. Timmeeee Says:

I second the Millet red dot, BSA is trash.

    Happy belated birthday, Unc.

You young pup (I’ve got ~ 6 months on you). Have fun with the new 10/22!

Oh, BTW, +1 to Tam’s suggestion of the $30 BSA red dot at Wally World (or order from Midway for about the same price if you hate WalMart). I’ve got a BSA red dot sight on my S&W 422 that works well, and had one on my Marlin model 60 as well…

You do realize that the Millett is the same thing as the Trashco “Propoint”, right?

  21. Firehand Says:

Hadn’t heard of the Millet being the same as Tasco. Do know I got a Millet, one of the 1″ tube models, from Midway for my Carbine. It’s holding up better than anything else I’d tried, and plenty bright for sunny days.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
