The doctor had no need to ask the child about the father owning firearms - it had no relevance on his job, nor on his capabilities of treating the child. Furthermore, he completely violated all concepts of "doctor-patient confidentiality", as well as basic good taste and manners, by "reporting" a law-abiding family (can anyone say slander/libel?). As for the DARE situation... the real question is whether or not that was a product of the teaching, or a product of the very real fear a child has of losing his/her parents (as I am sure the DARE operators illustrated just how bad alcoholism can be for a person). Either way, though, it is somewhat disconcerting what our schools are training our children to be...
