In the 1960s I had a newspaper route in a small SW Ohio town. There was a large Shepard mix that would escape occasionally and aggressively chase and nip at me. Per my grandfathers instructions, I loaded a water pistol with a 50/50 mix of water and ammonia to carry on my route. It only took one squirt to the face and I broke him of chasing paperboys, for good.

If the dog is in road in TN, you can shoot it in self defense. I saw a guy do it in Coffey County and the sheriff’s deputy cited the dead dog’s owner for failure to keep the dog on a leash. This was during a century ride so I don’t know how it shook out but it’s a hell of a thing to see some guy riding with a pistol holder on his bike’s downtube.

Years ago I was riding with a group of club bicyclists. A country dog charged aggressively into our group…and despite our efforts to avoid him, was hit by 3 of us. He went yelping back to his yard.

We rode the same route every week. From then on, he just sat in his yard and watched us.
