Immigration Bill

I guess I should comment on it. Congress is at record disapproval and intent on making it worse. As far as I can tell, no one supports this bill except politicians. And, in true politician form, they feel the need to overhaul the entire thing in one fell swoop, as opposed to incremental changes. This will a bureaucratic nightmare. I don’t mind people immigrating here and encourage it. As do most people. But people want immigrants to play by the rules. But playing by the rules is hard. Ask these guys. That said, you don’t give people a pass when they don’t play by the rules. I mean, let’s have amnesty for the drug war, tax evasion, and gun laws if we’re pointing out failed social policies?

And, make no mistake, this is about both political parties trying to nail the Hispanic voting block for the next couple of generations.

Funny how the President’s ratings are reported ad-naseum, but when the new, majority dem congress ratings dump, there’s not a peep from msm.

  2. Ron W Says:

    Yes, Todd,

The mostly leftist major media has never criticized Bush on his immigration policies and proposals because they, like the most of the leftist Democrats, agree with him on allowing the invasion of our country and now they all want to legalize the invasion.

It should be noted that this bill has some gun control provisions thrown in whereby,as I understand, gun stores with maybe 5 or more employees could be classified as terrorist gangs if they fail to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s in their sales. But the real illegal imigrant gangs like MS-13 can be receive amnesty and instant legality by simply signing a document that says they have given up the gang…ah-huh, yeah!

But this bill is only to make the criminals in Washington “the leglaized version” of the ones who they are allowing to invade and impose on us to appease and accommodate it!! It’s a traitorous sellout!!!

  3. Stormy Dragon Says:

They do have tax amnesties from time to time.

  4. Manish Says:

so let me ask you this..whats the solution? There are 12 million people here illegally and they make up a good chunk of many sectors of the economy.

“Just enforce the laws that we have”? That seems to work so well with gun control and drugs as it did with alcohol back in the day. And yes we should have amnesty for all the things that you list and we all should work towards that, but the lack of an amnesty for those things shouldn’t stop the immigration bill going forward.

  5. Manish Says:

let me add….be careful what you wish for. Colorado tightened up some laws to make life difficult for illegal immigrants and now farmers can’t find people to work in their fields.

While conceding that the immigration bill is a turd, I don’t buy the whole “gotta play by the rules” logic. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t bend if not outright break the rules from time to time. Whether or not you care about those people breaking the rules depends on how much you care about them. How many people do you know who always drive the speed limit, and who never jaywalk, and who’ve never pirated an MP3?

As I say repeatedly, the solution to illegal immigration is a simplification (not a complication) of the immigration laws, as well as a focus on prosecuting those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants (especially those who do so under-the-table, to avoid taxation), and those who provide the false documentation. Call it “supply-side enforcement” (Copyright 2007 tgirsch), except that unlike supply-side economics, it actually could work.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
