A gun makes me safer in the same way that a good set of tools makes me a better mechanic.

A gun makes no one feel safer. A gun may give a foolish person a sense of security through the power a gun projects, but that is not the same as feeling safer.
There is no item, tool, or panic room that can make one feel safer. Only the self-confidence that a person has that they have the skills and abilities to use said item or tool (whether it be a set of hands and feet or a weapon) in order to meet the unexpected danger can contribute to a sense of security.

Discussing self-defense with someone who has never seen a handgun is like trying to discuss politics with someone who has never seen a politician.
