Time for a new multi-tool
I have a Leatherman I use a great deal and I like. But I am considering a new addition. Any thoughts from SayUncle readers?

I liked my old Leatherman well enough, but the handles were uncomfortable when trying to get a good grip with the pliers.
I had a Shrade for a little while, but I broke it.
Either the Gerber of Vic is nice, I’d have to see if all the blades locked open, etc.
The contour of the Vic’s handle might be useful.

i have an original leatherman, but he handles are no good for clamping down on the pliers; sharp edges that cut into my hand.
i have a schrade “tough tool”, but it’s a bit too big for my liking. also, the individual tools in the handles are near impossible to pry out; the pins holding them together are peened on too tight, with no way to adjust them.
i’m considering one of the newer leatherman models, possibly a fuse.

Don’t forget Leatherman’s support of Kerry in the last election.
I’ll have to hold that against Leatherman. I am almost never a boycotter but Kerry I make an exception for. And Pilot Gas stations of course.
Leaning toward the Vic but the one hand operation of the Gerber still has it in the running.

We keep Victorinox SwissTools in both cars. Things I like:
– The tools are on the outside so you can get to them without opening the pliers.
– The tools all lock into place so they can’t close on your fingers.
– Comes with a sheath.
It would be a bit heavy for carrying in a pocket. The Spirit version is a bit lighter, I think.

I have a Gerber myself. Don’t know which model as I’ve had it for years. It has slide locks for all the “blades n things”. Wouldn’t trade it for any other tool except another one just like it.

SOG. The EOD tool is what I use, but any of the PowerLock types are great. Best of all is that they’re easy to operate one-handed while not sacrificing strength like the Gerbers. The Victorinox is a good second choice. Avoid Gerber and Leatherman – they were by far the leading brands in warranty repair/returns that we did even thought we sold more of other brands.

Gerber Multi-Plier 600 Basic is the one I’ve had for almost a decade. Used almost daily. Still looks like new. Sells for around $50.

I have two of the new Waves. One is a replacement for the original Wave I lost. I keep one at work (I’m an industrial mech.) and one on me always.
Politics aside, I think it’s currently the finest multitool made. If you choose the Wave, get the leather sheath – the nylon loosens up too quickly and the velcro closure doesn’t last.

I own the wave as well – finest multitool I have ever used. Get the bit kit with it and it will have practically everything you need.
I haven’t used the others listed, but if something happened to my wave i would buy another in a second.
